D o you love feathers? I do! I love birds and I love feathers. There is just something about them that I find magical. It’s another one of those things that I just seem to be drawn to like cool vintage dishware, unique doors and windows, art dolls, bunting, and of course all the yarn, just to name a few. The Ridged Crochet Feather is beautiful on both sides so it works well for accessories, accent pieces, and many more projects. I’d love to see how you’ll use them!

The Inspiration
As I was looking through some of my design notebooks deciding what piece to share with you next I came across my turkey amigurumi piece that I designed some time ago before Jen Hayes Creations existed as a physical entity.
When this is the case with a pattern I like to rework the design again before posting it on the blog to check for accuracy and changes that I would make to the patterns now that I’m more experienced than I once was and to make sure that I can clearly explain any tricky spots.
As I was reworking the turkey (it will be coming to the blog in a couple of days!) I couldn’t help but think that it would be really cool if the feathers came in a variety of sizes as an independent design, so I set out to make it happen! I originally thought that I’d do a small, medium, and large version, but it just turns out that I needed to have a medium-small size as well to feel fully satisfied, so you’ll find all four patterns listed below.
Also, as you work through this design you will likely see that I have a consistent pattern to the feathers, no matter the size, that will allow you to adjust the size in width or height to within your desired specifications. It’s also fun to note that they look beautiful on both sides, so they work well for accessories, accent pieces, and many more projects.
The feathers were a lot of fun to make and I hope that you like them as much as I do!
The Yarn
The beauty of this pattern is the opportunity to use up your scrap yarn! I went to my scrap box, picked out several colors that I thought went well together, and then went crazy with putting together all the beautiful combinations! I stuck to Red Heart Super Saver colors for my feathers, but let your scrap box be your individual guide!
I’m even thinking that when I get a few spare moments that it would be fun to pull out some of those specialty yarns (you know the fuzzy ones that most of us have laying around gathering dust?) and see how they too might be incorporated into the feather design in various ways. Have fun using up those scraps! I’m excited to see what you will create!

Design Notes
- The pattern is written using US crochet terminology.
- The pattern is written in rows.
- At the end of each row the number of stitches for completion is noted in parentheses.
- A variety of yarns can be used for this project. It makes a great stash-buster project. Changing yarn and/or hook size can change the overall size and appearance of the finished feathers as well.
- There is only one color change noted in the design, but changing colors multiple times, or leaving the feathers all one color is also a great option.
Abbreviations/Stitches Used
- BLO– work in the back loop only
- ch – Chain
- Row(s) – Rows
- sc – Single crochet
- sc2tog – Single crochet 2 stitches together (decrease)
- st(s) – Stitch(s)

Topstitching
There are a couple of ways to make the line down the center of the feather (technically called the rachis). The easiest way is probably topstitching.
Insert the hook up through from the underside of the feather to the top of the feather at the middle point where the two colors meet. With the top point of the feather pointing to the left, hook the yarn (leaving a tail long enough to weave in later) and pull it down through the feather.
Now, looking at the underside of the feather and working to the right, move the hook with the working loop still attached to the space directly in front of the next rib and push through to the top, grab the working yarn, and pull it back down and through the loop on the hook.
Continuing to look at the underside of the feather, insert the hook through the space directly after the rib, grab the working yarn and pull it back down through again. Continue this process working each of the spaces directly before and directly after each raised rib of the feather.
When the end of the feather is reached, cut the yarn (leaving a tail long enough to weave in the end) and pull it through the final loop on the hook. When stitched this way one side of the feather looks like it has a row of chains down the center, and the other side, a row of short, straight stitches.
To weave in the ends, thread the tail with a tapestry needle and work it up the center through the ridges, right near the topstitched line. Because the ridges are thicker you can work the tapestry needle into the ridge and it won’t show through on either side! (see picture below)
Alternatively, to topstitching, you can hand stitch a line running down the center using a back stitch, or omit the line entirely.

The colors are pretty for the feathers.
Jen says
Thanks! These are some of my favorite colors. I love using them together in my creations……..and in everything for that matter. 🙂
Willene van Zyl says
Hi Jen,
Your finished length for the small feather met with a finger fault. 3.5 inches = 9 cm, not 21.
Could you kindly fix that?
Jen says
Hey! Thanks for pointing that out. I’ve fixed it now. Have a great day!
Patricia says
Was there a video made by any chance?
Jen says
Patricia, at this time I do not have videos for my patterns, but it is a goal I have for the future. If I can help you in some other way please let me know.

Hi Jen, I love these feathers! I have been looking for a great pattern to make some and now I have found it! One little thing, though, I can’t seem to see the pattern for the Large one. I could probably work it out myself, but also wanted you to know that only 3 of the 4 sizes are written out on your page. I have read and re-read the page to see if I missed something, but I just can’t see any reference as to where else it might be. Thanks, Ann
Jen says
Ann! You’re totally correct. I don’t know how I overlooked this! I’m so glad that you are enjoying the pattern and now the Large pattern really is there! Thanks for so kindly pointing out my mistake. Best wishes to you!
Ann Connellan says
You are the best! Thanks so much. All the best to you!

These feathers are CAPTIVATING. I’ve had crochet block recently. I think you’ve thawed me because these warm my heart! Thank you!
Jen says
Yeah! I’m so glad that you like them! I hate it when I hit a crochet roadblock. It’s quite frustrating at times. I’m glad that this pattern could help. They were seriously so fun for me to make as well with all the color variation option, that I didn’t want to move onto the next project for a while. Have a wonderful day! 🙂

Hello…. Nice patterns… thanks so much for sharing them. I have a question, so far about the small feather, and from first glance, the others as well, are you leaving one stitch unworked in the first row?
Again..thank you.
Jen says
You’re welcome! Glad that you’re enjoying my patterns. To answer your questions, yes there is one stitched that is not worked in the 1st row. You skip this stitch at the very beginning when you sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. Besides this skipped stitch there are two other stitches in the middle of the row that will be skipped as well. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.
Rockii says
Hello there! I was wondering if there is any way I could get help on the stitching? I don’t seem to understand it from the pattern 😞
Jen says
Rockii, I know that we chatted about this on another platform, but for others who may need help and look to the comments for a possible answer, if you Google “surface crochet” this is the technique used to make the stitching down the center of the feather. If you still have questions after that, let me know, I’m glad to help.
