Let’s Get Started!
Materials
- Crochet Hook, Size G/6 (4.0 mm)
- Stitch Marker(s)
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
- Pins (optional)
- Red Heart Super Saver (worsted 4-Medium, 100% acrylic, 364 yds/333 m, 7 oz/198 g), Color (A) Paddy Green
- For the Small Shamrock, I used Size 10 Crochet Thread (Aunt Lydia’s in Kerry Green) and a 1.50 mm Steel Crochet Hook
Design Notes
- This pattern is written using US crochet terminology.
- At the end of each row I will note in parenthesis how many stitches you should have in that row once it is completed.
- Exact gauge is not essential to this project.
- You can easily change the size of your shamrock by the size of hook and type of yarn you use. I did! If you note, on the Crochet Heart Pillow I used an F Hook, wanting the shamrock to be a bit larger I used a size G. I then went drastic in the opposite direction and used crochet thread and 1.50mm hook to shrink my shamrock.

Shamrock Leaves
Make 3
(Starting with the bottom V portion of the leaf, from the bottom tip and working upwards)
- Ch 2
- Row 1: scinc in the 2nd chain from the hook (2)
- Row 2: ch1, turn, [scinc] 2times (4)

- Row 21: ch1, turn, scinc, sc in the next 30sc, sc inc (34)
- Rows 22: ch1, turn, sc across (34sts)
- Do NOT fasten off.
You will now begin to form the upper “hump” portions of your leaf, working to create the right side first. Only half of the stitches from Row 22 will be used in this part. The others will be used to make the left hump.
- Row 1: ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc in the next 13sc, sc2tog (15sts)
- Rows 2-3: ch1, turn, sc across (15sts for 2 rows)
- Row 4: ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc in the next 111sc, sc2tog (13sts)
- Row 5: ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc in the next 9sc, sc2tog (11sts)

- Row 7: ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc in the next 7sc, sc2tog (9sts)
- Row 8: ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc in the next 5sc, sc2tog (7sts)
- Row 9: ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc in the next 3sc, sc2tog (5sts)
- Row 10: ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc in the next sc, sc2tog (3sts)
You will now create the left hump
- Slst into the sc from round 22 where you started working the right side of your hump. It will be right in the middle. You will have 17sts to the left of your hook in which you will now work the left hump of the leaf. You will NOT work in this slst space again.
- Row 1: ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc in the next 13sc, sc2tog (15sts)
- Rows 2-3: ch1, turn, sc across (15sts for 2 rows)
- Row 4: ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc in the next 111sc, sc2tog (13sts)
- Row 5: ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc in the next 9sc, sc2tog (11sts)
- Rows 6: ch1, turn, sc across (11sts)
- Row 7: ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc in the next 7sc, sc2tog (9sts)
- Row 8: ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc in the next 5sc, sc2tog (7sts)
- Row 9: ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc in the next 3sc, sc2tog (5sts)
- Row 10: ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc in the next sc, sc2tog (3sts)

Assembly and Finishing
Whip stitch the edges together along the bottom V portion of each leaf.
Put the stem in place and attach the upper portion to the shamrock leaves. I personally attached about the upper 6 or 7 rows.
Weave in all your ends.
For a more finished look fasten on to anywhere you would like on the outer edge and sc around the entire edge of your shamrock. At the bottom corners of the stem you will likely need to crochet 2-3 stitches in the corners to help round the corners and maintain shape. Weave in your ends. Embellish if desired.
Enjoy your Shamrock!

Now for the promised potential variations!
- Variation 1: Using the full Crochet Heart Pillow Pattern, complete three of the stuffed heart pillow patterns minus the outside edging and then stitch these together. For the stem you would need to make two pieces from the stem pattern above and then sew them together, stuffing as you go, then attach this to the leaves. Note, I have NOT tested this style of stem but in theory it should work. Stuffing items will sometimes change the shape however so no guaranteed perfection. If you try it I’d love to see it!
- Variation 2: Make 2 complete shamrocks from the pattern above. Once they are both completely sewn together place one on top of the other and either sc or whip stitch the outer edges together. Stuff, if desired, before fully closing up the hole.
- Variation3: Discussed above, the simple act of changing the weight of your yarn and/or size of your hook will change how your shamrock turns out.
