Welcome to the second cupcake pattern I have for you this week in celebration of my birthday! I decided to call this one the Whip It Up On Top Crochet Cupcake because off all the puffy bobbles on top. I know it’s a mouth full, but you can call yours whatever you want. As I said in my last post, secret number one is that I’m really not a huge fan of cupcakes when it comes to eating them. If I am going to eat one, and it’s going to have frosting on it, then I’m more for the whipped cream style frosting. Which leads to secret number two…..if I do eat a cupcake I usually just scrape off the icing (at least most of it) and just eat the cake part. It’s just how I roll.
Ok, now that we’ve talked cake let’s get onto making some! I made my bobbles all white and whipped cream looking, but feel free to mix your colors up however you would like! I’m so excited to see what you will create!

Design Notes
- Due to the nature of the design using both front post double crochet and a whole lot of bobble stitches, this pattern may be tricky for a beginner, but really it’s just learning where to place your hook, so I won’t be the one to hold you back!
- This pattern is written using US crochet terminology. I choose to use a size E crochet hook. That said, the ultimate desired result is to achieve a tight crochet fabric that when stuffed will not allow the stuffing show through. If a different sized hook works better for you, then by all means, use it! Do note, however, that if you change the hook size or the type of yarn you are using, that this will have an effect on the size and look of your finished item.
- This pattern is written in rounds. Some of them will be created in a spiral, others will be joined. I will let you know in the pattern which you should be doing.
- It will be helpful to place a stitch marker at the beginning stitch of the round and to move it up as you start each additional round.
- At the end of each round, I will note in parenthesis how many stitches you should have once completed.
- As I was writing up this post I decided that I needed more pictures, so don’t be alarmed when you begin to see different colors on the cupcake! I worked up another identical cupcake to take more pictures but used different colors. I also moved the stripe (Just in the pictures, not in the pattern. The pattern is written to be like the featured image). I thought it would be fun to give you an even better idea of the possibilities. Curious what these other pictured colors are? Caron Simply Soft in Soft Green, Orchid, and Soft Pink. Enjoy!

Special Stitches
Bobble (bo): I used a 5dc bobble in this pattern. Essentially it’s 5 half finished double crochets all in the same stitch that are joined at the end as one stitch. And because that is all sorts of confusing, here are some directions! You create the bobble as follows:
- Yarn over, insert your hook into the next stitch
- Yarn over and pull up a loop (three loops on the hook)
- Yarn over and pull through two of the loops
- Stop here! (two loops on your hook). If you were doing a full double crochet you would yarn over again and pull it through the final two loops to finish the dc, but with a bobble you stop half way, leaving the extra loop on the hook. One of the five legs completed.
Ok, now repeat steps 1-4, four more times, inserting the hook into the same stitch that you just worked into. Also remember that each time you repeat the sequence that you should have one more loop added to your hook.
Now, yarn over and pull through all six of the loops on your hook. This closes your bobble stitch. Congratulations, you just made a bobble!
>Design Note: When making bobbles some patterns will have you make a chain after you have made the bobble to secure them even more. I DO NOT have you make this chain in the pattern, simply make your sc in the next stitch followed by a bobble and so on as the pattern directs.
Cupcake Liner
We will be starting at the base of the cupcake liner and working our way up to the cherry on top!
Using Color (A)
Work in rounds until noted to join at the end of the row.
- Rnd 1: 6sc in adjustable (magic) circle (6sts)
- Rnd 1 alternative: If you don’t know how to/do not like using an adjustable circle you can ch2 and then 6sc in 2nd chain from hook (6sts)
- Rnd 2: 2sc in each st around (12sts)
- Rnd 3: [Sc in the next st, 2sc in next st] 6 times (18sts)
- Rnd 4: [Sc in the next
2st , 2sc in the next sc] 6 times (24sts) - Rnd 5: [Sc in the next
3st , 2sc in the next sc] 6 times (30sts) - Rnd 6: [Sc in the next 4st, 2sc in the next sc] 6 times (36sts)
- Rnd 7: [Sc in BLO] 36 times, switch to Color (C) on the final step of the last st,
sl st to the 1st sc (36sts)
>Design Note: We will now start to make the outer wall of our cupcake liner. We want it to be straight so we are going to stop working in a spiral and join at the end of each row and chain 1 at the beginning of each row. This chain does not count as a stitch throughout. You DO NOT turn your work at any time.
>Design Option: The pattern to follow will create ridges in your cupcake liner. If you do not want ridges you can replace the Fpdc in the pattern below with sc. Obviously it will change the look of your piece.
- Rnd 8: Ch1, Sc in the same st, Fpdc in the next st, [Sc in the next st, Fpdc in the next st] 17 times, switch back to Pistachio on the final step of the last Fpdc,
sl st to the 1st st to join (36sts) - Rnd 9-13: Repeat round 8. On Round 13, switch to Color (B) on the final loop of the last Fpdc,
sl st to the 1st st to join (36sts for 5 rounds)
For the rest of the pattern we will be creating the bobbled cake portion of our cupcake. Bobbles sometimes get fiddly working in rounds. Push them back out if they try to bobble in instead of out. I have a technique to help with this, but it will be easiest to show in a video. (I’m working in that direction as I’m adding content, but it may take awhile. Thanks for your patience, support, and understanding as I’m working to make th blog one that you can return to find instruction, answers to questions, design options and tips, and great free patterns! ) For now, show those bobbles who’s boss!
- Rnd 14: Ch1, Working in the FLO for this round: sc in the same space, bo in the next st [sc in the next st, bo in the next st] 17 times, fasten off (36sts)
- Rnd 15: Fasten on with
a sc to one of the bl from Rnd 13, (working in the back loops): bo in the next st, [sc in the next st, bo in the next st] 17 times,sl st to the 1st st to join (36sts)
- Rnd 16: Ch1, sc in the same
st and in the next 3sts, sc2tog, [sc in the next 4sts, sc2tog in the next] 5 times,sl st to the 1st st (30sts)
Begin stuffing and shaping your piece. Continue to do so as you go along.
- Rnd 17: Ch1, sc in the same st, bo the next st, [sc the next st, bo the next st] 14 times,
sl st to the 1st st (30sts) - Rnd 18: Ch1, sc in the same
st and in the next 2sts, sc2tog, [sc in the next 3sts, sc2tog] 5 times,sl st to the 1st st (24sts) - Rnd 19: Ch1, sc in the same st, bo the next st, [sc the next st, bo the next st] 11 times,
sl st to the 1st st (24sts) - Rnd 20: Ch1, sc in the same st, sc2tog, [sc in the next, sc2tog] 7 times,
sl st to the 1st st (16sts) - Rnd 21: Ch1, sc in the same st, bo the next st [sc the next st, bo the next st] 7 times,
sl st to the 1st st (16sts) - Rnd 22: Ch1, [sc2tog] 8 times (8sts)
- Rnd 23: Ch1, sc2tog, bo, sc2tog, bo, sc2tog, slst to the 1st st (5sts)
- Fasten off and weave in your ends.
The Cherry on Top
Using Color (D)
- Rnd 1: 6sc in adjustable (magic) circle (6sts)
- Rnd 1 alternative: If you don’t know how to/do not like using an adjustable circle you can ch2 and then 6sc in 2nd chain from hook (6sts)
- Rnd 2: 2sc in each st around (12sts)
- Rnd 3: [Sc in the next st, 2sc in next st] 6 times (18sts)
- Rnd 4: 2sc in each st around (18sts)
- Rnd 5: [Sc in the next st, sc2tog] 6 times (12sts)
Stuff and shape your cherry
- Rnd 6: [Sc2tog] 6 times (6sts)
- Fasten off. Leave a tail to close up the hole and attach the cherry to the top of the cupcake. Weave in your ends.
