I’m excited to share the Weighted Crochet Snuggle Cat! It is a larger crochet piece, the finished item being approximately 16 inches tall, and has the option for adding an additional weighted sensory component with the use of Fairfield World Poly-Pellets. This beginner-friendly piece is sure to be a hit for all ages.

The Inspiration
This year I’ve decided that really want to stretch myself with my design. I want to make pieces that are both large and tiny, beginner-friendly and more advanced. I also want to incorporate a variety of yarns and materials in my creations.
I like to joke that I have a world in my head that is constantly buzzing around just asking to be brought to life! It is my hope to share even more of my ideas with you in new and exciting ways!
To put it simply, I’m hoping that together we can build upon our design and maker skills this year to create pieces that we’ll love to make, share, donate, and give!
When Fairfield World reached out to me about designing some pieces for them I was beyond excited! I have purchased and used Poly-fil and Poly-Pellets in my amigurumi for years, not to mention their pillow forms, foam, batting, and other products in my broad range of craft projects. They are definitely products that I use frequently and recommend.
Thinking through the design I decided to go with a project that was large. Something that you could just wrap your arms around and give a good squeeze because there’s just something heartwarming about a good hug whether you’re giving or receiving it.
I decided that a more beginner-friendly project with a few pieces that could perhaps stretch the skills of a beginner just a little, as well as be enjoyed by a more advanced crocheter was the way to go.
Add in the touch of hand embroidery that the design offers when making the whiskers and mouth and almost every basic skill needed for amigurumi is found in making this piece!
As a final element to the design, I thought it would be fun to provide the option of adding a proprioceptive component. This is incorporated into the design by creating a weighted piece using Poly-Pellets that can be added or omitted from the design based on personal preference.
Whether being used for play or more functionally as something like a doorstop, the Weighted Crochet Snuggle Cat is sure to bring extra smiles and enjoyment to those who encounter him.
Why a cat? I have ideas for a variety of animals which you may very well see some time in the future, but when asking my family which animal they would like, the cat got the most votes, so the Weighted Crochet Snuggle Cat was born. I’d love to hear which type of animal(s) you’d love to see!
The Yarn
For the Weighted Crochet Snuggle Cat, I knew that I wanted to make a larger piece so I decided to also work with the largest skein of yarn in my stash, Caron One Pound by Yarnspirations.
Caron One Pound Yarn is an acrylic yarn that comes in a wide variety of colors and, as the name implies, comes with a huge pound of yarn goodness making it great for larger projects or working up multiple items.
It is machine washable and dryable, but per my usual recommendations when it comes to amigurumi I suggest spot cleaning a piece if needed, or recognizing that washing and drying may significantly change or even ruin an amigurumi piece. Just use good judgement.
Because I would describe the One Pound Yarn as a slightly thicker worsted weight yarn compared to some of the other worsted yarns I decided to use another option when making my second prototype (I always make at least two). This way I could also offer a comparison.
For the purple Weighted Crochet Snuggle Cat that you see in the pictures, I used Red Heart Super Saver Yarn because I knew that this is one acrylic yarn that many would turn to. I used the colors Pale Plum, Soft White, Medium Purple, Baby Pink, and Black.
The final results were that either yarn will work perfectly. The Red Heart Cat may be somewhat smaller than the Caron One Pound, but not by much and some of that may factor in by the way the cat is stuffed and shaped.
Whichever you choose I think you will have a project that you’ll love to make, share, sell, donate, or gift! Spread all the handmade kindness!
Substitutions. Any brand of worsted weight yarn should work well for making the Weighted Crochet Snuggle Cat but note that due to variations among brands the finished size of the Cat may vary slightly. Mixing brands together in a single piece may also have varying results and change the overall look, so substitute wisely.

Design Notes
- The pattern is written using US crochet terminology.
- The pattern is written primarily in rounds, it will be helpful to place a stitch marker at the beginning stitch of the round and move it up at the start of each additional round. The portions of the pattern written in rows will be noted.
- At the end of each round/row, the number of stitches for completion is noted in parentheses.
- Color changes in the pattern should be made during the last step of the stitch prior to the noted color change throughout the pattern.
- Further design notes will be provided throughout the pattern to help aid in construction.
- Some of the images also show a purple cat. The yarn used for this cat is Red Heart Super Saver (worsted 4-Medium, 100% acrylic, 364 yds/333 m, 7 oz/198 g), in Color (A) Color Pale Plum, Color (B) Off White, Color (C) Medium Purple, Color (D) Baby Pink, Color (E) Black

Let’s Make Our Weighted Crochet Snuggle Cat!
Making the Weighted Insert
The following instructions will help to create the weighted insert to be placed inside the Cat’s body. The weighted piece is optional and can be replaced by adding additional Poly-fil.
- Cut 2 – 8.5 inch (21.6 cm) diameter circles from fleece fabric in a color coordinating with the Color (A) yarn chosen for the Cat. The top of a 1.5 qt (1.4 L) glass Pyrex bowl was used as a template to make the 8.5 inch (21.6 cm) circles in the pattern. A similar bowl, plate, compass, etc. can be used to make a template. Exact measurements are not important but should be close to this size.
- Using a sewing machine sew the circles together with a ½ inch (1.27 cm) seam allowance (right sides together if applicable to the fabric, but ultimately the finished piece will be unseen within the cat so it’s not necessary), leaving a hole approximately 3 inches (7.5 cm) long to add the Poly-Pellets. Alternatively, the circles can be hand-stitched together in a similar fashion.
- Once the circles are sewn together turn the piece right side out so the seams are encased within.
- Using a funnel (optional, but helpful) fill with one pound of the Poly-Pellets.
- Tuck in the edge of the seam allowance left open for adding the Poly-Pellets into the piece and machine or hand stitch the hole closed.
- Set aside to be used later when making the Cat’s body.

Firmly stuff and shape the body.
>Design Tip: The body should be firmly stuffed for it to take shape. Stuff with Poly-fil in thin even layers, pushing down the layers each time more is added. Once fully stuffed in this fashion, go in along the edges and add additional Poly-fil to further shape spots that aren’t as full and shaped. Continue to stuff until the desired shape and firmness is achieved.
Once the body is fully stuffed to this point add the weighted piece (if using) and continue with the pattern to close up the body. This should fill up the remaining space, but if needed add additional Poly-fil.
If the weighted piece is not used, continue to add additional Poly-fil and shape the body as the pattern progresses.

- Fasten off leaving a long tail for stitching the stripe to the body. Weave in the starting tail.
Assembly
Pin all the pieces in place to determine the desired placement for the entire Weighted Crochet Snuggle Cat and then with a tapestry needle stitch them securely in place.
General placement and stitching suggestions:
- Determine which side of the body will be the front and find the vertical midline to help place the pieces symmetrically.
- Ears:
- Assembly: Place the inner ear pieces so the bottom sits centered just above the bottom sl st edge of the outer ears. Use a whip stitch to stitch into place.
- Placement: Attach the assembled ears on the top of the body with the inner portion of the outer ear at about Rnd 6-7 of the body and placed forwards towards the front of the body approximately 3-4 Rnds from the center of the body.
- Nose: Place the top center of the nose at about Rnd 33-34 of the body and the bottom of the nose at approximately Rnd 46, making sure to leave approximately 10 sts between the bottom of the nose and tummy panel to be able to stitch the mouth. Whipstitch the nose to the body firmly stuffing it with Poly-fil and shaping right before closing up the hole.
- Eyes: Place the top of the eyes at about Rnd 22-23 of the body, about 1-2 Rnds above the nose, and approximately 7sts apart at the central point of the eyes. Whipstitch them to the body.
- Tummy Panel: Fold the tummy patch in half finding a center point. Line this point up with the bottom tip of the nose along the center of the body, placing the top of the tummy panel about 10 Rnds below the nose and the bottom of the panel at about 5 Rnds from the bottom center of the body.
- Mouth: Using Color (E) – Black, or yarn color of choice, and a tapestry needle, embroider a mouth underneath the nose.
- Whiskers: Using Color (E) – Black, or yarn color of choice, and a tapestry needle, embroider three whiskers approximately ⅜ inch (0.95 cm) away from the nose, each about 5sts in length, on both sides of the nose.
- Stripes: The stripes are placed horizontally across the back of the body. Fold each of the stripes in half, identifying a center point. Line the center points up with the vertical midline of the back of the body placing the top of the medium stripe at about Rnd 35 of the body, the long stripe approximately 6 Rnds below the medium stripe, and the smallest approximately 5 Rnds below the longest stripe. Whip stitch in place.
- Tail: Place the tail on the body with the seam placed vertically approximately 4 Rnds below the smallest stripe. Stitch in place.

Do you have a smaller version (12 inches tall or less) of the snuggle cat. Your instructions and photos are perfect. Many thanks

I do not have a smaller version at this time, but I do love this idea!
