The Inspiration
Plans have been laid for some time to start bringing a variety of Halloween ornaments to the blog, and this is the year the fun begins!
I knew, while making them, that it would be pleasing if they could coordinate in some way, but what if they could also interact?
I’m not about to pretend that my amigurumi pieces will begin talking to each other (although in my mind they do become very much alive in some ways), but what if they could play off of each other?
I am fond of offering options in my patterns so this idea was especially intriguing to me. The Small Crochet Witch Hat became the key to realizing this.
Each of the patterns designed for this year’s Halloween Ornament Set has the option of being made as they are written in their individual patterns AND they can all wear the Small Crochet Witch Hat! And, I decided to add a small bow option to the patterns as well, because I can. Thus we have coordination, interaction, and options galore, what’s not to love? Happy Crocheting!

The Yarn
The Small Crochet Witch Hat was made using Red Heart Super Saver Yarn. As you may be well aware, this is a classic, inexpensive, worsted weight, acrylic yarn option. It’s what I, and perhaps many of you, began using early on in the journey of learning to crochet, and if like me, for many years to follow (30+ in my case!).
A color-loving heart will not be left wanting as Red Heart Super Saver Yarns come in a wide variety of solid colors including darks, neutrals, pastels, brights, and neons along with fleck, variegated, ombres, stripes, camos, metallics, brushed, and more! Truly a wide variety to choose from for any project!
In this design, I specifically chose to use a variety of colors that “spoke Halloween” to me, Black, Carrot, Charcoal, Dark Orchid, Gold, and Spring Green, but feel free to go with the colors that delight your heart.
Substitutions. Any brand of worsted weight acrylic yarn should work well for making the Small Crochet Witch Hat but note that due to variations among brands, the finished size may vary slightly. If a worsted cotton yarn is preferred, this too should work fine. Making the Small Crochet Witch Hat with different-sized yarns has not been tested, but should also likely work well, just make sure that any necessary hook size adjustments are made to accommodate the chosen yarn.
As always, I’d love to see/hear about your experiences with making the design and the products you chose to use. Tag me on social media @jenhayescreations and use the hashtag #jenhayescreations to share!
