The Inspiration
The Small Crochet Pumpkin is part of a set of interactive Halloween Ornaments. Each of the ornaments can be used alone either as an ornament or just as a small Halloween piece for decoration, gift-giving, turning into a keychain, imaginative play, and so much more.
One of the patterns in the set includes a witch hat which interactively can be worn by the Small Crochet Pumpkin all of the additional pieces in the set for a broader range of creative possibilities. I’ve also included a small bow in the patterns for yet another sweet design option.
As you’ll see in some of the images, one of the real beauties of the Small Crochet Pumpkin is that it can also be used throughout the Fall and Thanksgiving seasons as well! Don’t you just love it when patterns are so versatile?
However you decide to use the Small Crochet Pumpkin, I wish you Happy Crocheting!

The Yarn
The Small Crochet Pumpkin was made using Red Heart Super Saver Yarn. This is a classic, inexpensive, worsted weight, acrylic yarn option that is often readily available in many stores and online.
For those who love to have a wide variety of color options, Red Heart Super Saver Yarns fits the bill. It comes in a wide variety of solid colors including darks, neutrals, pastels, brights, and neons along with fleck, variegated, ombres, stripes, camos, metallics, brushed, and more! There truly is a wide variety to choose from for any project!
For the Small Crochet Pumpkins, I chose to use a variety of colors that felt “pumpkin-like,” including the colors Carrot, Redwood, Gold, and both Buff and Aran Fleck (I love fleck yarn, so easy to add detail built right into the yarn!), but feel free to go with the colors that delight your heart. I’m thinking that I might just make a purple one next, or maybe even play with making some stripes!
Substitutions. Any brand of worsted weight acrylic yarn should work well for making the Small Crochet Pumpkin but note that due to variations among brands, the finished size may vary slightly. If a worsted cotton yarn is preferred, this too should work fine. Making the Small Crochet Pumpkin with different-sized yarns has not been tested, but should also likely work well, just make sure that any necessary hook size adjustments are made to accommodate the chosen yarn.
As always, I’d love to see/hear about your experiences with making the design and the products you chose to use. Tag me on social media @jenhayescreations and use the hashtag #jenhayescreations to share!

Design Notes
- The pattern is written in English using US crochet terminology.
- The pattern is written in continuous rounds, it will be helpful to place a stitch marker at the beginning stitch of the round and move it up at the start of each additional round.
- At the end of each round/row, the number of stitches for completion is noted in parentheses.
- Further design notes, tips, and options will be provided throughout the pattern to help aid in construction.
- Caution! If using safety eyes, take into consideration who will be using the item. The use of safety eyes is not recommended for children under the age of three or for those prone to putting things in their mouths as they may cause a choking hazard. Crocheted or hand-embroidered eyes are a great alternative!

Let’s Make Our Small Crochet Pumpkin!
Pumpkin
Using Color (A)
- Rnd 1: 5sc in an adjustable (magic) circle. (5sts)
- Rnd 1 alternative: If preferred, ch 2 and then 5sc in 2nd chain from hook. (5sts)
- Rnd 2: 2sc in each st around. (10sts)
- Rnd 3: [2sc in next st, working in BLO: sc in the next st] 5 times. (15sts)
- Rnd 4: [2sc in next st, sc in the next st, working in BLO: sc in the next st] 5 times. (20sts)
- Rnd 5: [2sc in next st, sc in the next 2sts, working in BLO: sc in the next st] 5 times. (25sts)
- Rnd 6: [2sc in next st, sc in the next 3sts, working in BLO: sc in the next st] 5 times. (30sts)
- Rnd 7: [2sc in next st, sc in the next 4sts, working in BLO: sc in the next st] 5 times. (35sts)
- Rnds 8-12: [Sc in the next 6sts, working in BLO: sc in the next st] 5 times. (35sts for 5 Rnds)
- Rnd 13: [Sc2tog, sc in the next 4sts, working in BLO: sc in the next st] 5 times. (30sts)
- Rnd 14: [Sc2tog, sc in the next 3sts, working in BLO: sc in the next st] 5 times. (25sts)
- Rnd 15: [Sc2tog, sc in the next 2sts, working in BLO: sc in the next st] 5 times. (20sts)
>Design Option: Add safety eyes and any other desired facial features. Just make sure when adding the eyes not to cover the column of front loops (left from working in the BLO) which will be used later when shaping the pumpkin. Adding some of the features now, like the eyes, and then stitching the mouth after shaping may be appropriate. Suggested Eye Placement: Between Rnds 9 and 10, approximately 4-5sts apart, straddling one of the columns of front loops.
Firmly stuff and shape the Small Crochet Pumpkin and continue to do so as the pattern progresses.
- Rnd 16: [Sc2tog, sc in the next st, working in BLO: sc in the next st] 5 times. (15sts)
- Rnd 17: [Sc2tog, working in BLO: sc in the next st] 5 times. (10sts)
- Fasten off leaving an extra long tail to close up the hole and shape the sides of the pumpkin.
- Close the hole with a tapestry needle stitching only through the front loops until the hole pulls nicely closed. Do not fasten off.
- Shape the pumpkin: *Using the tapestry needle, run the yarn tail behind the entire column of front loops (left when working in the BLO) closest to the tapestry needle, pull taught so the pumpkin indents on that side. Run the tapestry needle from the bottom of the pumpkin up through to the top center of the pumpkin, pulling taught again. >Design Tip: It may be helpful while holding the yarn taught, to make a small stitch in the top center of the pumpkin to help maintain the tightness of the indentions. Repeat from * for the other 4 sections.
- Once the desired shape is achieved, secure and weave in the tail.
>Design Option: For additional detail and definition, and to create another look, repeat the above shaping process with another length of yarn, but this time run the yarn on the outside of the pumpkin over the top of the column of front loops, each time pulling the yarn taught to create an indention, going up through the center of the pumpkin again each time. Repeat for each section. For additional contrast, use a darker yarn in this step.
Stem
>Design Note: If making the Small Crochet Pumpkin wearing a witch hat, the stem and curlicue(s) can be omitted. However, as written, they tuck nicely into the hat, so the hat can be left removable.
Using Color (B)
- Rnd 1: 5sc in an adjustable (magic) circle. (5sts)
- Rnd 1 alternative: If preferred, ch 2 and then 5sc in 2nd chain from hook. (5sts)
- Rnd 2: Working in BLO: Sc in each st around. (5sts)
- Rnds 3-4: Sc in each st around. (5sts for 2 Rnds)
- Fasten off leaving a long tail for stitching the stem to the pumpkin.
- Firmly stuff and shape the stem.
Curlicue(s)
(Optional)
Using Color (C)
- Fasten onto any of the sts in Rnd 4 of the stem.
- Ch 13
>Design Option: The length of the curlicue can be easily increased or decreased depending on the number of starting chains made.
- Rnd 1: In the back bars of the ch: 2sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across, sl st back onto the stem in the same st. (24sts)
- >Design Option: Add a second curlicue. Ch 13 and repeat Rnd 1.
- Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Assembly
Using a tapestry needle and the yarn tail left from the stem, stitch the stem to the top center of the pumpkin.
Additional Options for the Small Crochet Pumpkin
1. Add a Witch Hat
To add a hat, use the Witch Hat pattern found HERE.
>Design Note: If securing the hat to the Small Crochet Pumpkin so that it cannot be removed, the stem and the curlicue(s) can be omitted. Otherwise, as written, they tuck nicely into the hat.
2. Add a Bow
Bow
Using a desired color (used approx. 3 yds/3 m)
- Ch 4, [dc in the 4th ch from the hook] 2 times, ch 3, sl st in the same st, ch 4, [dc in the 4th ch from the hook] 2 times, ch 3, sl st in the same st.
- Fasten off leaving a long tail for wrapping several times around the middle and for securing the bow to the project. Weave in the starting tail.
- Wrap the center of the bow as many times as desired. Then, using a tapestry needle make several sts at the back of the bow to secure the wraps.
- Add the bow to the project.
3. Turn the Small Crochet Pumpkin into an Ornament
Cut a length of yarn (or ribbon) long enough to create a loop for hanging. Using a tapestry needle thread one end into the top of the Small Crochet Pumpkin, remove the needle, and knot the two ends together. Turn the loop until the knot hides inside the pumpkin.
