The Inspiration
The Small Crochet Ghost is part of a set of interactive Halloween Ornaments. Each of the ornaments can be used alone either as an ornament or just as a small Halloween piece for decoration, gift-giving, turning into a keychain, imaginative play, and so much more.
One of the patterns in the set includes a witch hat which interactively can be worn by the Small Crochet Ghost and all of the other pieces in the set for a broader range of creative possibilities. I’ve also included a small bow in the pattern which, for a white ghost, instantly adds a cute pop of color that’s just irresistible.
Regardless of how you decide to use the Small Crochet Ghost, I wish you Happy Crocheting!

The Yarn
The Small Crochet Ghost was made using Red Heart Super Saver Yarn. This is a classic, inexpensive, worsted weight, acrylic yarn option that is often readily available in many stores and online.
For those who love to have a wide variety of color options, Red Heart Super Saver Yarns is perfect. It comes in a wide variety of solid colors including darks, neutrals, pastels, brights, and neons along with fleck, variegated, ombres, stripes, camos, metallics, brushed, and more! There is truly a wide variety to choose from for any project!
For the Small Crochet Ghost, I didn’t stray too far from the norm, sticking to a classic white ghost. However, I did go with the Soft White yarn rather than the White which is more stark. This is mostly because of personal preference in my designs, and honestly because it can be trickier to photograph stark black and white objects and get clear stitch definition in progress pictures.
All that said, there’s still a part of my color-loving heart that wants to make a ghost in every color of the rainbow because I can, and perhaps I will before the spooky season comes to a close.
Substitutions. Any brand of worsted weight acrylic yarn should work well for making the Small Crochet Ghost but note that due to variations among brands, the finished size may vary slightly. If a worsted cotton yarn is preferred, this too should work fine. Making the Small Crochet Ghost with different-sized yarns has not been tested, but should also likely work well, just make sure that any necessary hook size adjustments are made to accommodate the chosen yarn.

Design Notes
- The pattern is written in English using US crochet terminology.
- The pattern is written in continuous rounds, it will be helpful to place a stitch marker at the beginning stitch of the round and move it up at the start of each additional round.
- At the end of each round, the number of stitches for completion is noted in parentheses.
- Further design notes, tips, and options will be provided throughout the pattern to help aid in construction.
- Caution! If using safety eyes, take into consideration who will be using the item. The use of safety eyes is not recommended for children under the age of three or for those prone to putting things in their mouths as they may cause a choking hazard. Crocheted or hand-embroidered eyes are a great alternative!

Ghost Body
Using Color (A)
- Rnd 1: 6sc in an adjustable (magic) circle. (6sts)

In the next Rnd, the arms will be added seamlessly to the body. If omitting the arms, instead make a sc in each of the sts noted to join.
- Rnd 9: Sc in the next 6sts, now join the left arm to the body: With the working loop still on the hook, insert the hook into one of the stitches of the arm from the front side to the back side of the piece, then insert the hook into the next st of the body from the right side to the wrong side of the piece, yo, pull loop through the body and the arm, yo, pull through both loops, continue to join the arm and body together in the next st, working on the body: sc in the next 11sts, now join the right arm to the body: With the working loop still on the hook, insert the hook into the right edge stitch of the arm (with the right side facing out) from the front side to the back side of the piece, then insert the hook into the next st of the body from the right side to the wrong side of the piece, yo, pull loop through the body and the arm, yo, pull through both loops, continue to join the arm and body together in the next st, working on the body: sc in the next 3sts. (24sts)
- Rnds 10-11: Sc in each st around. (24sts for 2 Rnds)
Insert the safety eyes. The suggested placement is between Rnds 7 and 8 approximately 3sts apart, centered with the arms. The starting st is at the back of the piece.
>Design Option: Using embroidery floss and an embroidery needle, stitch the mouth, cheeks, eyelashes, and any other desired facial features. Use 6 strands for thicker features and 3 strands for thinner features.
- Rnds 12-15: Sc in each st around. (24sts for 4 Rnds)
>Design Option: The height of the Small Crochet Ghost can be adjusted by adding to (or decreasing) the number of Rnds at this point.

Firmly stuff and shape the ghost and continue to do so as the pattern progresses.
- Rnd 17: Working in the unused back loops of Rnd 15: Sc in the next st (marked previously with a st marker), sc2tog, [sc in the next 2sts, sc2tog] 5 times, sc in the next st. (18sts) >Design Tip: When decreasing in the back loops use a regular sc dec.
- Rnd 18: [Sc in the next st, sc2tog] 6 times. (12sts)
- Rnd 19: [Sc2tog] 6 times. (6sts)
- Fasten off leaving a long tail to close up the hole. Close the hole with a tapestry needle stitching only through the front loops until the hole pulls nicely closed, secure, and weave in the end.
Additional Options
1. Add a Witch Hat
Use the Witch Hat pattern found HERE. It can either be stitched on or left removable.
2. Add a Bow
Using a desired color (used approx. 3 yds/3 m)
- Ch 4, [dc in the 4th ch from the hook] 2 times, ch 3, sl st in the same st, ch 4, [dc in the 4th ch from the hook] 2 times, ch 3, sl st in the same st.
- Fasten off leaving a long tail for wrapping several times around the middle and securing the bow to the project. Weave in the starting tail.
- Stitch the bow on the Ghost in the desired location.
3. Turn the Ghost into an Ornament
Cut a length of yarn (or ribbon) long enough to create a loop for hanging. Using a tapestry needle thread one end into the top of the Small Crochet Ghost, remove the needle, and knot the two ends together. Turn the loop until the knot hides inside the ghost.
