Monday was my birthday so I thought it would be fun to share a birthday related pattern with you to celebrate! I came up with several options, but in the end decided to go with the obvious birthday shareable item, cupcakes!
I must admit that they quickly became a bit of an obsession to make. One idea led to another and then another and before I knew it I had three different treats made and a long list of variations for future cupcake possibilities!
Today I will be sharing with you how to make the Rosette Swirl Crochet Cupcake and I’ll be posting the other two patterns throughout the week! Be sure to subscribe to my newsletter for updates!
Also, if you are dying for more cupcake designs after you’ve tried these beauties, let me know in the comments…..like I said I’ve got a list of ideas that I can revisit and create if you’re interested!
Before we get into the pattern, I have a bit of a confession to make as well. A bit of a secret, you might say. I think that cupcakes are super fun and cute! They make the perfect little blank canvases for decoration, design, and color potential, not to mention all the “accessories” to go with them; cupcake liners, and candies, and picks and candles!
What’s not to love? They’re fabulous! What’s my secret? Well, when it comes to eating them, they’re not my favorite. There you have it. The secret is out. I don’t really like eating cupcakes, but I do love crocheting them!
Now let’s get to creating our tantalizing treats!

Design Notes
- This pattern is written using US crochet terminology. I choose to use a size E crochet hook. That said, the ultimate desired result is to achieve a tight crochet fabric that when stuffed will not allow the stuffing show through. If a different sized hook works better for you, then by all means, use it! Do note, however, that if you change the hook
size, or the type of yarn you are using, that this will have anaffect on the size and look of your finished item. - This pattern is written in rounds. Some of them will be created in a spiral, others will be joined. I will let you know in the pattern which you should be doing.
- It will be helpful to place a stitch marker at the beginning stitch of the round and to move it up as you start each additional round.
- At the end of each
round I will note in parenthesis how many stitches you should have in that row once completed.
Abbreviations/Stitches Used
- BLO – back loop only
- ch – Chain
- Crab Stitch (described below)
- FLO – front loop only
- Fpdc – front post double crochet
- Rnd(s) – Round(s)
- sc – Single crochet
- sc2tog – Single crochet 2 stitches together
- sl st – Slip stitch
- st(s) – Stitch(s)
- [ ] – Work instructions between brackets as many times as directed
- magic circle/adjustable ring
Special Stitches
Crab Stitch: The crab stitch is created just like single crochet stitches, except you work the stitch to the right of your hook instead of the stitch to the left. Essentially you are working backward on your row. You will start the row by chaining one and then insert the hook into the stitch to the right, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook. It may take several stitches before you can truly see what the stitch looks like and how cool it is. This is a fun stitch to have in your arsenal for easy, decorative borders.
Let’s Make Our Cupcake!
Cupcake Liner
We will be starting at the base of the cupcake liner and working our way up to the whipped cream dollop on top!
Work in rounds until noted to join at the end of the row.
Using Color (A)
- Rnd 1: 6sc in adjustable (magic) circle (6sts)
- Rnd 1 alternative: If you don’t know how to/do not like using an adjustable circle you can ch2 and then 6sc in 2nd chain from hook (6sts)
- Rnd 2: 2sc in each st around (12sts)
- Rnd 3: [Sc in the next st, 2sc in next st] 6 times (18sts)
- Rnd 4: [Sc in the next 2sts, 2sc in the next st] 6 times (24sts)
- Rnd 5: [Sc in the next 3sts, 2sc in the next st] 6 times (30sts)
- Rnd 6: [Sc in the next 4sts, 2sc in the next st] 6 times (36sts)
- Rnd 7: [Sc in BLO] 36 times, sl st to the 1st st (36sts)
>Design Note: We will now start to make the outer wall of our cupcake liner. We want it to be straight so we are going to stop working in a spiral and join at the end of each row and chain 1 at the beginning of each row. This chain does not count as a stitch throughout. You DO NOT turn your work at any time.
>Design Option: The pattern to follow will create ridges in your cupcake liner. If you do not want ridges you can replace the Fpdc in the pattern below with sc. Obviously it will change the look of your piece.
- Rnd 8: Ch1, Sc in the same st, Fpdc in the next st, [Sc in the next st, Fpdc in the next st] 17 times,
sl st to the 1st st to join (36sts) - Rnd 9-13: Repeat round 8. On Round 13, switch to Color (B) on the final loop of the last Fpdc,
sl st to the 1st st to join (36sts for 5 rounds) - Rnd 14: Ch1, Working in the FLO for this round, sc in the same space and around (36sts)
- Rnd 15: Ch1, Crab Stitch around (36sts) Fasten off. I use the tail to nicely connect the end stitch to the first stitch. My personal opinion is that it looks nicer when I add stitches by hand rather than trying to slip stitch and then fasten off.
Working in rounds again:
- Rnd 16: Using Color (C), fasten on with a sc to one of the back loops from Rnd 14, sc in each of the back loops around, sl st to the 1st st to join (36sts)
- Rnd 17: Sc in each stitch around (36sts)
- Rnd 18: [Sc in the next 4sts, sc2tog] 6 times (30sts)
- Rnd 19: Sc in each st around (30sts)
- Rnd 20: [Sc in the next 3sts, sc2tog] 6 times (24sts)
- Rnd 21: [Sc in the next 2sts, sc2tog] 6 times (18sts)
Begin stuffing and shaping your piece. Continue to to do so as you go along.
- Rnd 22: [Sc in the next st, sc2tog] 6 times (12sts)
- Rnd 23: [Sc in the next st, sc2tog] 4 times (8sts)
- Sl st to 1st. Fasten off. Leave a tail to sew the hole closed.
Rosette Swirl Frosting
Using a G hook and Color (D)
- Ch 45
>Design Tip: If you want a nice finished look on both top and bottom edge of your piece when starting with a chain, work in the back bar (the single loop underneath the stitch) rather than the two loops like you would if doing a regular sc. Just flip the chain over so you see the side with the single bar and crochet across as directed in the pattern.
- Row 1: 2sc in the 2nd chain from the hook, 2sc in each of the next 2sts, 2dc in each of the remaining stitches (88sts)
- Fasten off. Leave a long tail for shaping and sewing the frosting together and to the top of the cupcake (See the pictures above for shaping and placement). Weave in your beginning tail. Using the long tail I took small “strategically” placed stitches here and there to tack the spiral to the cupcake as well as to itself. Just make sure it’s secured and looks how you want it to, there’s no exact science.
>Design Tip: Putting two stitches in each chain space causes the chain to spiral. If you want a shorter spiral then decrease the number of chains that you start out with. You can also play with the type of stitch(es) you use if you don’t like how wide the spiral is (for example, sc, hdc, dc, or you can make it wider with a tr stitch).
Add a Little Dollop of White on Top
Using Color (B)
- Ch7
- Row 1: 2sc in the 2nd chain from the hook, 2sc in each stitch across (12sts)
- Fasten off. Leave a long tail for shaping and sewing to the top of the cupcake. Weave in your beginning tail.
