The Inspiration
Creating an ongoing Crochet Christmas Ornament Collection is something that I’ve had on my mind and in the works for some time now. Mrs. Claus, along with Santa and several other designs will be part of the classic portion of the collection, but I also plan to include options that are just fun and whimsical.
I plan to just keep adding to this as ideas come to my mind so if you have an ornament design that you’d like to see let me know in the comments, I’d love to add it to my list!

The Yarn
The Mrs. Claus Crochet Ornament was made using Brava Worsted Yarn that can be found online from either WeCrochet or Knit Picks. It is a worsted, acrylic yarn that comes in a wide range of colors with variations including striped, tweeds, speckles, and recycled, and is available in sizes bulky, worsted, and sport.
Learn even more of the specifics about this yarn in my Brava Yarn Review found HERE.
The colors used for the Mrs. Claus Crochet Ornament are Cream (skin color), Dove Heather (hair color), Red (for the bow), and Dublin (for the leaves).
Substitutions
Any brand of worsted weight acrylic (or cotton) yarn should work well for making the Mrs. Claus Crochet Ornament but note that due to variations among brands, the finished size may vary slightly. Also note, if mixing yarn brands, that it’s important to ensure that the thickness of the yarns are the same to ensure consistency in stitching.
Brava Sport (or another brand of sport yarn) would also work well to create a slightly smaller ornament. You could even go for a mini ornament by using crochet thread. Curio thread, also from WeCrochet and Knit Picks, is a great option.
You can see the miniature version of the Mrs. Claus Crochet Ornament in some of the images. She was made using the same pattern, a 1.50 mm hook, and size 10 cotton crochet thread.
As always, I’d love to see/hear about your experiences with making the design and the products you chose to use. Tag me on social media @jenhayescreations and use the hashtag #jenhayescreations to share!

Design Notes
- The pattern is written in English using US crochet terminology.
- The pattern is written primarily in continuous rounds, it will be helpful to place a stitch marker at the beginning stitch of the round and move it up at the start of each additional round.
- At the end of each round, the number of stitches for completion is noted in parentheses.
- Further design notes, tips, and options will be provided throughout the pattern to help aid in construction.
- The yarn under method was used when designing this piece, the yarn over method can also be used and will potentially create a slightly larger character.
- Caution! If using safety eyes, take into consideration who will be using the item. The use of safety eyes is not recommended for children under the age of three or for those prone to putting things in their mouths as they may cause a choking hazard. Crocheted or hand-embroidered eyes are a great alternative!

- Rnd 8: In FLO: [Sl st in the next st, ch 1] 23 times, sl st in the next st. (47sts)

Embellishing the Bun

Image Right: The bun with a band and a bow.
The bun can be left with just the decorative band or embellished even more with a bow and holly leaves.
Bow
(Optional)
Using Color (C) – Red
>Design Note: The hairbow uses sl sts that will need to be worked into in the next row. Don’t make them too tight or it will be difficult to stitch into them later. If desired these sl sts can be replaced with sc, but it will modify the bow slightly.
- Ch 8
- Row 1: Working in the back bars of the ch: Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook, hdc in the next st, sl st in the next 2sts, hdc in the next 2sts. (6sts)

- Fasten off leaving a tail long enough to wrap around the center of the bow several times and attach the bow to the bun.
- Weave in the starting tail. Weave the long tail to the center of the bow and wrap it several times. Using a tapestry needle, secure the tail by stitching several times through the center wraps. Leave the remaining tail to stitch the bow to the bun.
Holly Leaf
(Optional)
Make 2
Using Color (D) – Green
>Design Note: The holly leaf is made by working on both sides of the ch.
- Ch 7
- Working in the back bars of the ch: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in the next ch, picot, sc in the next 2ch, picot, sc in the next 2ch, picot, working on the other side of the ch: sc in the next 2ch, picot, sc in the next 2ch, picot, sc in the next 2ch.
- Sl st to the first st and fasten off leaving a long tail for stitching the leaf to the hat. Weave in the starting tail.
Assembly
Pin all the pieces together to determine the desired placement for the entire Mrs. Claus Crochet Ornament and stitch securely in place.
General placement and stitching suggestions:
- Bun: Stitch the bun to the hair utilizing the unused back loops from Rnd 8 of the bun (behind the decorative band). The band rests at about Rnd 6 of the hair, so the stitching should be done at about Rnd 5. Before closing the hole add the stuffing to shape the bun (don’t overstuff). >Design Tip: Seeing the back loops is impossible without lifting the bun and/or manipulating the hair while stitching. Take it stitch by stitch centering the stitches of the bun over Rnd 5 of the hair. Pause periodically to ensure that the bun continues to look centered. It was easier to do this before adding the hair to the head, but it can be done either way. Another option is to use a length of Color (C) – Red and stitch the band to the hair but this will modify the look of the band.
- Hair: Position the hair so the long tail is at the back of the head and two scallops are centered and resting just above the eyes. Use the tail and a tapestry needle to tack the hair to the head in several places just above the scallops.
- Holly Leaves: (Optional) – If using, stitch the holly leaves in the desired position along the band in a way that looks aesthetically pleasing. Pictured, the leaves are tacked at the base of the leaf to about a third of the way up, leaving the top portion of the leaves loose.
- Bow: (Optional) – If using, stitch the bow at the base of the holly leaves or omit the leaves, and stitch it along the band in the desired position.
- Rosy Cheeks: (Optional) – If desired, use a bit of blush, crayon, paint, chalk pastel, etc. to add rosy cheeks. Pictured, a medium pink crayon was used with the color added in a circular shape over approx. Rnds 10-12, back from each eye about one st, for the length of about 2-3sts. >Design Tip: It’s easier to add more color than to take it away, so start light and build it up. The color can also be tested at the top of the head where the hair will cover once it’s stitched on.
Add A Hanger
A variety of materials can be used to hang the Mrs. Claus Crochet Ornament. Some suggestions include a length of ribbon, yarn, baker’s twine, metal, etc.
Pictured, 1/8 inch (3 mm) ribbon was used. It was cut at 10 inches (25 cm) and using a tapestry needle was threaded through the hair at the center front just below the band for the bun. The ends were then held together and knotted, and the knot was turned until it hid inside the hair. >Design Tip: If the knot does not want to hide all the way, use the wider end of the tapestry needle to push it in, being careful not to poke yourself.
