The Inspiration
Handmade ornaments are just so fun. Our family has a tradition of making them each year from paper, clay, popsicle sticks, and other crafty supplies. I’ve also been designing crochet ornaments for several years but haven’t yet taken all the pictures to get them posted. So many ideas, limited time.
However, I decided I needed to change this and start getting them into the world so others could make and enjoy them too. This year I’ll be sharing five of the more classic designs, and if I plan a bit better and life cooperates I hope to share even more than this next year.
However things turn out, the goal is to continue adding to them year after year. If you have an idea that you’d like to see, please leave it in the comments.

The Yarn
The Crochet Snowman Ornament was made using Brava Worsted Yarn that can be found online from WeCrochet or Knit Picks. It is a worsted, acrylic yarn that comes in a wide range of colors with variations including striped, tweeds, speckles, and recycled, and is available in sizes bulky, worsted, and sport.
You can learn even more of the specifics for this yarn in my Brava Yarn Review found HERE.
The colors used for the Crochet Snowman Ornament are White (for the head), Paprika (for the nose), Sienna (for the hat which would also be perfect in a black or deep grey, or even in some totally unexpected color), Red (for the stripe on the hat and the berries), and Dublin (for the holly leaves).
Substitutions
Any brand of worsted weight acrylic (or cotton) yarn should work well for making the Crochet Snowman Ornament but note that due to variations among brands, the finished size may vary slightly. Also note, if mixing yarn brands, that it’s important to ensure that the thickness of the yarns are the same to ensure consistency in stitching.
Brava Sport (or another brand of sport yarn) would also work well to create a slightly smaller ornament. The miniature ornament shown in some of the images is made with the same pattern using size 10 crochet thread and a 1.5 mm hook. The only change is the use of 4 mm eyes. Making all the miniature versions of the ornaments has me thinking that I need to find a miniature tree to put them on!

Design Notes
- The pattern is written in English using US crochet terminology.
- The pattern is written in continuous rounds, it will be helpful to place a stitch marker at the beginning stitch of the round and move it up at the start of each additional round.
- At the end of each round/row, the number of stitches for completion is noted in parentheses.
- Further design notes, tips, and options will be provided throughout the pattern to help aid in construction.
- For reference when placing eyes and other facial features the starting stitch is at the back of the work.
- Color changes in the pattern should be made during the last step of the stitch prior to the noted color change throughout the pattern.
- The yarn under method was used when designing this piece, the yarn over method can also be used and will potentially create a slightly larger character.
- Caution! If using safety eyes, take into consideration who will be using the item. The use of safety eyes is not recommended for children under the age of three or for those prone to putting things in their mouths as they may cause a choking hazard. Crocheted or hand-embroidered eyes are a great alternative!

(>Design Note: It may be necessary to cut off some of the tail to have it all fit.) Close the hole with a tapestry needle stitching only through the front loops until the hole pulls nicely closed, secure, and leave the tail for attaching the berry to the hat.
Assembly
Pin all the pieces together to determine the desired placement for the entire Crochet Snowman Ornament and stitch securely in place.
General placement and stitching suggestions:
- Nose: Center the nose according to the placement of the eyes, over approx. Rnds 10-13 of the head.
- Hat: Using a tapestry needle, thread the Color (D) – Red tail left previously when making the hat, and bring it to the right side of the piece within the decorative band section. Pull the hat down over the top of the head so it rests just above the eyes. The hat can sit straight on the head or be tilted to either side. Tack the hat to the head in several places along the decorative band. >Design Option: With the gap between the head and the top of the hat, the top surface of the hat may sink. This is a fine look, however, to help hold the shape a bit of stuffing can also be added right before closing the hole (but don’t overstuff) to minimize this.
- Leaves and Berry: (Optional) – If using, stitch the holly leaves and berry to the hat in a way that looks aesthetically pleasing. In the pictures, the leaves go either in the same direction towards the back of the hat or in opposite directions and are tacked at the base of the leaf to about a third of the way up, leaving the top portion of the leaves loose. The berry is then stitched at the base of the leaves.
- Rosy Cheeks: (Optional) – If desired, use a bit of blush, crayon, paint, chalk pastel, etc. to add rosy cheeks. Pictured, a medium pink crayon was used with the color added in a circular shape over approx. Rnds 11-13, back from each eye about one st, for the length of about 2-3sts. >Design Tip: It’s easier to add more color than to take it away, so start light and build it up. The color can also be tested at the top of the head where the hat will cover once it’s stitched on.
Add a Hanger
A variety of materials can be used to hang the Crochet Snowman Ornament. Some suggestions include a length of yarn, ribbon, yarn, baker’s twine, metal, etc.
Pictured, 1/8 inch (3 mm) ribbon was used. It was cut at 10 inches (25 cm) and using a tapestry needle was threaded through the top of the hat over Rnd 1. The ends were then held together and knotted, and the knot was turned until it hid inside the head. >Design Tip: If the knot does not want to hide all the way, use the wider end of the tapestry needle to push it in, being careful not to poke yourself.
