Get ready to build your own Crochet Snowman Gnome! When I was young one of my favorite types of books was the choose your own adventure kind of book where you would read the story to a certain point and then it would give you a list of options and pages to turn to.
Depending on your choice the outcome of the story changed. Really you could read the book in a variety of ways all with a different outcome. I loved to read and enjoyed seeing where each path would lead. Did you ever read this kind of book?
The longer I design crochet patterns the more I find that like a choose your own adventure book, I enjoy having options to choose from in my amigurumi patterns. The Crochet Snowman Gnome is no exception. Once I got started I couldn’t help but think of the possibilities.
So I present to you several fun options to build your own Crochet Snowman Gnome pattern!
You’ll start by picking one of the two body options. Then pick the style of nose you want. Will you go with a round gnome-like nose or a more carrot-like nose? The pattern on the blog includes the top hat with the option for adding holly and berries. If you decide to grab the inexpensive PDF option I’ve included yet another option as well, a fun crochet beanie that can be made with or without a pom pom.
Remember that switching up your favorite color combinations adds a huge variety of possibilities as well. I’m so excited to see the Crochet Snowman Gnome that you’ll create! Will you be able to stop at just one? Good luck and Happy Crocheting!

The Inspiration
If you’ve been around Jen Hayes Creations for a while you’ll know that I love gnomes, especially Scandinavian-style gnomes. As an amigurumi designer, my mind goes wild with the possibilities in just about everything I see, and the gnome ideas are no exception.
Seriously, I currently have about sixty ideas written down for different types of gnomes and the ideas just keep coming. While taking the current season into consideration when thinking about what I wanted to design next, it just made sense that it was time to build a snowman.
While I’ll never again be able to say, “Do you want to build a snowman?” without practically singing the words thanks to the Disney movie, Frozen, and the bazillion times my girls wanted to watch it when it first came out, I knew that in fact, yes, I did want to build a snowman.
Actual snow now surrounds me in a good abundance outdoors, but this girl is a-okay about missing out on the freezing snow part of making a snowman. Taking the project indoors is more my style. That said, I’m so excited to bring you the Crochet Snowman Gnome! I think that you’re going to love the possibilities that this pattern brings. I’ve already made six with plans for more. How many will you be making?!!
The Yarn
The Crochet Snowman Gnome pattern uses Yarnspiration Caron Simply Soft yarn. It is a medium, size 4, lighter worsted yarn that, as its name implies, is super soft.
It also has a bit of a sheen to it and comes in a variety of colors. The solid colors come in skeins that are 6 oz / 170 g, approximately 315 yards / 288 m.
It is also available in tweeds, heathers, speckles, and a variety of mixed, variegated colors. These too are gorgeous options, the yardage varying according to the chosen style.
The biggest complaint that I hear about Caron Simply Soft yarn is that it can have a tendency to split.
Honestly, I must agree that this can be the case. When I first started using the yarn I had more trouble than I do now.
Once I learned how my hook and crochet style interacted with the yarn I rarely have this issue. In fact, when it comes to acrylic yarns it has become one of my go-to yarns over the years for making amigurumi.
Substitutions. Any brand of worsted weight acrylic yarn should work well for making the Crochet Snowman Gnome but note that due to variations among brands that the finished size may vary slightly. Also note, if mixing yarn brands, that it’s important to ensure that the thickness of the yarns are the same to ensure consistency in stitching.
If a worsted cotton yarn is preferred, this too should work fine. Making the Crochet Snowman Gnome with different-sized yarns has not been tested, but should also likely work well, just make sure that any necessary hook size adjustments are made to accommodate the chosen yarn.
As always, I’d love to see/hear about your experiences with making the design and the products you chose to use. Tag me on social media @jenhayescreations to share!

Design Notes
- The pattern is written in English using US crochet terminology.
- The pattern is written in continuous rounds, it will be helpful to place a stitch marker at the beginning stitch of the round and move it up at the start of each additional round.
- At the end of each round, the number of stitches for completion is noted in parentheses.
- Further design notes and tips will be provided throughout the pattern to help aid in construction.
- Color changes in the pattern should be made during the last step of the stitch prior to the noted color change throughout the pattern.
- To add some weight to the Snowman Gnome, which will help it to stand more easily, use Poly-Pellets encased in a nylon stocking (or other fabric of choice). To eliminate color showing through the white yarn of the body, using a white, light tan, or another light color is recommended. Three to four Poly-Pellet “bundles” can be made from one knee-high stocking depending on how it is tied and cut each time. The toe does not need to be tied, but after that simply knot the beginning and end of each bundle if making more than one.
- In the pattern 2 wooden buttons approx. 1/2 inch /12 mm are used. Based on preference, slightly larger or smaller buttons or those made of different materials can be substituted.
- Caution! If using buttons, take into consideration who will be using the item. The use of buttons is not recommended for children under the age of three or for those prone to putting things in their mouth as they may cause a choking hazard. Crocheted buttons are a great alternative and the instructions are included in the pattern.
- Note that based on the personal color choices used when making the pattern that the amount of each yarn used in Colors C, D, and E will vary.

To create a 3dcbo
With the working loop on the hook:
- Yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch,
- Yarn over and pull up a loop (three loops on the hook),
- Yarn over and pull through two loops (one leg made, two loops on the hook),
- Yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch,

Let’s Make Our Crochet Snowman Gnome!
Weighted Base
>Design Notes:
- To eliminate color from the stocking showing through the white yarn of the body, using a white, light tan, or another light-colored stocking is recommended.
- Three to four Poly-Pellet “bundles” can be made from one adult knee-high stocking depending on how it is tied and cut each time. The toe does not need to be tied, but after that, simply knot the beginning and end of each bundle if making more than one.
Making the Weighted Base
- Pour approximately 5 ounces (1 cup) of Poly-Pellets into the toe of a nylon stocking. Working the stocking from the outside, get the Poly-Pellets as far down into the stocking as possible. Knot the top to secure and cut.
- Set aside for later.
Nose
There are two noses to choose from, a round nose and a pointy, carrot-like nose. Only one of the options is needed.
Round Nose
Make 1
Using Color (B)
- Rnd 1: 6sc in adjustable (magic) circle. (6sts)
- Rnd 1 alternative: If preferred, ch 2 and then 6sc in 2nd chain from hook. (6sts)
- Rnd 2: 2sc in each st around. (12sts)
- Rnd 3: [Sc in the next st, 2sc in next st] 6 times. (18sts)
- Rnds 4-5: Sc in each st around. (18sts for 2 Rnds)
- Rnd 6: [Sc in the next st, sc2tog] 6 times. (12sts)
- Rnd 7: [Sc in the next st, sc2tog] 4 times. (8sts)
- Fasten off.
- Firmly stuff and shape the nose and set it aside for later.
Carrot Nose
Make 1
Using Color (B)
- Rnd 1: 6sc in adjustable (magic) circle. (6sts)
- Rnd 1 alternative: If preferred, ch 2 and then 6sc in 2nd chain from hook. (6 sts)
- Rnd 2: Sc in the next 5sts, 2sc in the next st. (7sts)
- Rnd 3: Sc in each st around. (7sts)
- Rnd 4: 2sc in the next st, sc in the next 6sts. (8sts)
- Rnd 5: Sc in each st around. (8sts)
Firmly stuff and shape the nose and continue to do so as the pattern progresses.
- Rnd 6: [Sc in the next 3sts, 2sc in next st] 2 times. (10sts)
- Rnd 7: [Sc in the next 4sts, 2sc in next st] 2 times. (12sts)
- Rnd 8: [Sc in the next 4sts, sc2tog] 2 times. (10sts)
- Rnd 9: [Sc in the next 3sts, sc2tog] 2 times. (8sts)
- Fasten off and set aside for later.
Mittens and Arms
The mittens and arms are worked as one seamless piece. Starting with the main part of the mitten the arm is then added followed by finishing the mitten’s cuff.
>Design Note: The pattern images show three different colors of mitten options. All of the options have been noted below. The choice to be used is personal design preference.
Make 2
Using Color (C, D, OR E)
- Rnd 1: 6sc in adjustable (magic) circle. (6sts)
- Rnd 1 alternative: If preferred, ch 2 and then 6sc in 2nd chain from hook. (6sts)
- Rnd 2: 2sc in each st around. (12sts)
- Rnd 3: [Sc in the next 5sts, 2sc in next st] 2 times. (14sts)
- Rnds 4-5: Sc in each st around. (14sts for 2 Rnds)
- Rnd 6: Bo in the next st, sc in the next 13sts. (14sts)
- Rnd 7: Sc in each st around. (14sts)
- Rnd 8: [Sc2tog, sc in the next 5sts] 2 times. (12sts)
- Rnd 9: [Sc in the next 4sts, sc2tog] 2 times. (10sts)
- Put a stitch marker in the working loop. It will be returned to later to create the mitten’s cuff. Do not fasten off. Take the starting stitch marker and move it so that it marks only the front loop of the first st. This marker will also be used later when making the cuff. The arm is now going to be made. Use an additional stitch marker to mark the first stitch of the arm.
Adding the Arm to the Mitten
Using Color (A)
- Rnd 10: Using the BLO from Rnd 9 of the mitten (starting at the first st with a standing sc): [Sc in the next 4sts, 2sc in the next st] 2 times. (12sts)
Stuff and shape the mitten. Leave the arm unstuffed as the pattern progresses.
- Rnds 11-18: Sc in each st around. (12sts for 8 Rnds)
- Rnd 19: Sc in the next 3sts, leave the remaining sts unworked. (3sts)
>Design Note: The last 3sts made in Rnd 19 should position the working yarn with the stitch lining up above the bobble found in the mitten and at the right edge when the top edges are pressed together. If it doesn’t, add or remove stitches to achieve the noted placement.
- Press the top edges together, flattening the arm, with the thumb (bobble) pointing to the right. Ch 1, sc the top edge together. (ch + 6sts)
>Design Note: It’s important when stitching the top edges together that it results in 6sts as they will be used later when joining the arms to the body.
- Fasten off.
Returning to the Mitten
- Insert the hook back into the working loop from earlier: Using the FLO from Rnd 9 of the Mitten: [Sc in the next 4sts, 2sc in the next st] 2 times. (12sts)
- Fasten off using the invisible finish (or alternatively sl st in the first st, fasten off). Weave in the tail.
- Set aside for later.
Crocheted Buttons (Optional)
Make 2
Using Color (C)
>Design Note: Crocheted buttons can be used to replace the regular buttons.
- Rnd 1: 6sc in adjustable (magic) circle. (6sts)
- Rnd 1 alternative: If preferred, ch 2 and then 6sc in 2nd chain from hook. (6sts)
- Sl st into the first st and fasten off leaving a long tail to stitch the button to the body. Weave in the starting tail. Set aside for later.
Body
There are two body types to choose from, a straight body and a round body. Only one of the options is needed.
Straight Body
Make 1
Using Color (A)
- Rnd 1: 6sc in adjustable (magic) circle. (6sts)
- Rnd 1 alternative: If preferred, ch2 and then 6sc in 2nd chain from hook. (6sts)
- Rnd 2: 2sc in each st around. (12sts)
- Rnd 3: [Sc in the next st, 2sc in next st] 6 times. (18sts)
- Rnd 4: [Sc in the next 2sts, 2sc in next st] 6 times. (24sts)
- Rnd 5: [Sc in the next 3sts, 2sc in next st] 6 times. (30sts)
- Rnd 6: [Sc in the next 4sts, 2sc in next st] 6 times. (36sts)
- Rnd 7: [Sc in the next 5sts, 2sc in next st] 6 times. (42sts)
- Rnd 8: [Sc in the next 6sts, 2sc in next st] 6 times. (48sts)
- Rnds 9-24: Sc in each st around. (48sts for 16 Rnds)
In the next round, the bottom of the nose is added seamlessly to the body.
- Rnd 25: Sc in the next 22sts, now join the nose to the body: With the working loop still on the hook, insert hook into any st on the nose from the wrong side to the right side of the piece, then insert the hook into the next st of the body from the right side to the wrong side of the piece, yo, pull loop through the body and the nose, yo, pull through both loops, continue to join the nose and body sts together for the next 3sts, sc in the next 22sts. (48sts)
- In the next row the top of the nose, as well as the arms, are added seamlessly to the body. In preparation for adding the arms, mark sts 9, 14, 35, 40 on the body. Also, note that these four stitch markers are temporary and can be removed in Rnd 26 once the arms are joined to the body.
- With thumbs facing forward, using the sts just marked, clip the arms to either side of the body in the 1st and 6th st of the arm.
- Rnd 26: On the body: Sc in the next 8sts, now join the arm to the body: with the working loop still on the hook, insert the hook through both the arm and the body: sc the arm and the body together for 6sts, on the body: sc in the next 8sts, now join the top of the nose to the body: [With the working loop still on the hook, insert hook into the next st on the nose closest to the hook from the right side to the wrong side of the piece, then insert the hook into the next st of the body from the right side to the wrong side of the piece, yo, pull loop through the body and the nose, yo, pull through both loops] 4 times, on the body: sc in the next 8sts, now join the arm to the body (with the working loop still on the hook, insert the hook through both the arm and the body) sc the arm and the body together for 6sts, on the body: sc in the next 8sts. (48sts)
- Rnds 27-34: Sc in each st around. (48sts for 8 Rnds)
>Design Note: While stitching the buttons on after the Snowman Gnome is fully crocheted is possible, it will be easier to stitch them on now. Space the buttons down the front, centered under the nose. It may be helpful to add the weighted base or stuffing to get a better idea for button placement and then remove this filler momentarily to make stitching the buttons easier. Suggested button placement: (using 1/2 inch /12 mm buttons) center the middle of the buttons at approximately Rnds 13 and 19 for the straight snowman and at approximately Rnds 15 and 20 for the round snowman.
If using, add the Poly-Pellets encased in the nylon for the weighted bottom.
Firmly stuff and shape the body with Poly-fil stuffing and continue to do so as the pattern progresses.
- Rnd 35: [Sc in the next 4sts, sc2tog] 8 times. (40sts)
- Rnd 36: [Sc in the next 3sts, sc2tog] 8 times. (32sts)
- Rnd 37: [Sc in the next 2sts, sc2tog] 8 times. (24sts)
- Rnd 38: [Sc in the next st, sc2tog] 8 times. (16sts)
- Rnd 39: [Sc in the next 2sts, sc2tog] 4 times. (12sts)
- Rnd 40: [Sc in the next st, sc2tog] 4 times. (8sts)
- Sl st into the first st and fasten off leaving a long tail to close up the hole. Close the hole with a tapestry needle stitching only through the front loops until the hole pulls nicely closed, secure, and weave in the tail.

- Sl st to the first st and fasten off leaving a long tail for stitching the leaf to the hat. Weave in the starting tail.
Holly Berries
Make 3
Using Color (A OR D)
>Design Note: The color used is a personal choice. Either option works well.
- Rnd 1: 6sc in an adjustable (magic) circle. (6sts)
- Rnd 1 alternative: If preferred, ch2 and then 6sc in 2nd chain from hook. (6sts)
- Rnd 2: [Sc in the next st, sc2tog] 2 times. (4sts)
- Sl st into the first st and fasten off leaving a long tail to close up the hole and attach the berry to the hat. Stuff the starting tail into the inside of the berry. (>Design Note: It may be necessary to cut off some of the tail to have it all fit.) Close the hole with a tapestry needle stitching only through the front loops until the hole pulls nicely closed, secure, and leave the tail for attaching the berry to the hat.
Beanie
As noted above, because options are fun, if you choose, as part of purchasing the inexpensive PDF you will also receive an additional beanie pattern to go along with the Crochet Snowman Gnome, offering you an additional option when creating your Snowman Gnome! Happy Crocheting!
Assembly
General placement and stitching suggestions:
- Buttons: If the two buttons were not added earlier, stitch them on at this time. Suggested button placement: (using 1/2 inch /12 mm buttons) center the middle of the buttons under the nose at approximately Rnds 13 and 19 for the straight snowman and at approximately Rnds 15 and 20 for the round snowman. Crocheted buttons can also be substituted.
- Top Hat: If adding the holly and berries to the top hat, stitch the bottom of the holly leaves to the desired place on the hat, leaving the top of the leaves unattached. Then stitch the berries at the base of the leaves as desired.
- General Assembly: Pull the hat down on the head until it rests down on the nose and just over the top of the arms. The hat can be left as is so that it can be removed or tacked onto the body so it cannot be removed.

Love this Pattern. I was wondering though, there is no pattern for the other hat shown in the picture (beanie hat) only for the top hat. Do you have one for the beanie?
thanks
Jen says
The beanie is included as a bonus to those who snag the inexpensive PDF option. All the other options are available on the blog.

these are so cute I am going to make some for next year no time this year and am thinking a container could be put in the center and give as a candy, tissue etc. gift. hummm possibilities abound.
Jen says
That is a fun idea! You could totally leave off the top of the body, insert a container as the “filler” and then use the hat as the lid. Love it!

I saw these cute gnomes in my instagram feed, then I noticed that you are also from Utah so I just add to join. I’m in a small town in Cache Valley. Definitely following you and subscribing.
Jen says
Awesome and welcome! We actually lived in Logan for several years while we were doing some of our schooling. We thought that we would eventually settle in Wellsville, but life had different plans. Still, we love Cache Valley and visit there at least a couple of times a year.

I’m so glad that you like it. Making garment patterns is not my specialty, but I would like to learn to design them, so perhaps in the future. I’ll be sure to share when I do.

Hi! I’m working on this and am practically finished I just need to make the hat. The only problem I have is that I would like to make the beanie but I don’t see the instructions for it. Is it posted elsewhere?
Thanks in advance.
Karla says
Thanks for this adorable pattern! I just finished my first one and it came out so cute. Only thing missing is the berries… And I just can’t figure out how to get round berries as in your picture. I did five now and they all look like a bumpy mess. Horrible! Maybe you can help me with these? Im desperate.
Greetings from Germany
Jen says
Hello, and thanks for the kind greetings! I’m glad that you’ve enjoyed the pattern. The berries, they can be a bit fiddly since they are so small. And, to be honest, mine aren’t perfectly round either. When you lump them all together on the hat they mesh together. Perhaps try this though to see if it helps, instead of making the decreases in Rnd 2, sc in each st around for the 6sts, then close the hole by stitching through only the front loops until the berry closes and forms. Let me know if that helps. 😊
Karla says
Hey Jen, seems my answer wasn’t sent the first time. Thanks for your suggestions. I found a solution that worked for me. After a few tries I came up with my own little pattern:
Rd1: 4 sc in mr (4)
Rd2: incr x4 (8)
Rd3: invisible dec x4 (4)
Close hole by stitching only through front loops.
I got itty bitty round berries that made me happy. The snowman gnome is the cutest thing. I filled a piece of nylon stocking with fine craft gravel and put it in the middle of the bottom and the stuffing around it. I’ll crochet one or two more in different sizes.
Jen says
Perfect! I’m glad that you made it work! Wishing you the happiest of holidays!
