The Inspiration
The inspiration for this design actually came from looking at the mess on my craft room work table. Really, inspiration can come from anywhere! Looking down at the table scattered among the crochet paraphernalia I saw a Keychain Chapstick Holder and a Crochet Kawaii Pencil, two patterns already available on the blog, and thought “hmmm, it would be fun to combine those two designs together, and thus the Crochet Pencil Chapstick Holder and Keychain was born!
I’m excited about how the design turned out and hope that you enjoy it as well. I think they would make such fun gifts for friends and special thank yous for the teachers in our lives. Happy Crocheting!
The Yarn
Red Heart Super Saver yarn was used to make the Crochet Pencil Chapstick Holder and Keychain. It is an acrylic, worsted-weight (size 4) yarn that is available in a wide variety of colors and is typically easily accessible from a wide variety of places either locally or online.
Another fun thing about the Crochet Pencil Chapstick Holder and Keychain is that because of their smaller size and endless color possibilities, they are also a great project for using up scrap yarn!
Substitutions. Any brand of worsted weight yarn should work well for making the Crochet Pencil Chapstick Holder and Keychain but note that due to variations among brands the finished size may vary slightly but this can be easily adjusted by changing the hook size. One thing to consider is to make sure that all the colors being used are the same thickness. Even if all the brands are noted as worsted there can be a range in thickness. As always, I’d love to see/hear about your experiences with making the design and the products you chose to use. Tag me on social media @jenhayescreations to share!

Design Notes
- The pattern is written using US crochet terminology.
- The pattern is written in continuous rounds, it will be helpful to place a stitch marker at the beginning stitch of the round and move it up at the start of each additional round.
- At the end of each round, the number of stitches for completion is noted in parentheses.
- Further design notes will be provided throughout the pattern to help aid in construction.
- Color changes in the pattern should be made during the last step of the stitch prior to the noted color change throughout the pattern. The first stitch in the new color will be a slip stitch to help eliminate the stair-step/jogging that occurs with a color change. These sl sts are written into the pattern. A regular sc can be substituted if desired.
Abbreviations/Stitches Used

Let’s Make Our Crochet Pencil Chapstick Holder and Keychain!
>Design Note: The Crochet Pencil Chapstick Holder and Keychain is made from the bottom point to the top eraser portion of the piece.
Weave in the ends, work over them, or leave them on the outside of the work to be woven in later as the design progresses, as they will be difficult to reach on the inside of the piece once completed.
Using Color (A)
- Rnd 1: 4sc in adjustable (magic) circle. (4sts)
- Rnd 1 alternative: If preferred, ch2 and then 4sc in 2nd chain from hook. (4sts)
- Rnd 2: [Sc in the next st, 2sc in the next st] 2 times. (6sts)
- Rnd 3: Sc in each st around. (6sts)
Switch to Color (B)
- Rnd 4: Sl st in the next st, 2sc in the next st, [sc in the next st, 2sc in the next st] 2 times. (9sts)
- Rnd 5: [Sc in the next 2sts, 2sc in the next st] 3 times. (12sts)
- Rnd 6: Sc in each st around. (12sts)
Switch to Color (C)
>Design Note: This is the main color of the pencil. Adjustments to the length can be made during this section. For example, if the chapstick tube is longer or shorter than noted in the pattern materials list the Rnds made in this color may need to be increased or decreased.
- Rnd 7: Sl st in the first st, sc in the next 11sts. (12sts)
- Rnds 8-9: Sc in each st around. (12sts for 2 Rnds)
Check to see that the chapstick tube is going to fit into the crochet tub and make adjustments now if needed. The chapstick tube should go in without any issues with the crochet tube fitting snugly around it. The chapstick tube will not go all the way to the bottom point of the pencil, but to the 7th Rnd that has 12sts.
- Rnds 10-17: Sc in each st around. (12sts for 8 Rnds)
Switch to Color (D)
- Rnd 18: Sl st in the first st, sc in the next 11sts. (12sts)
- Rnd 19: In BLO: sc in each st around. (12sts)
>Design Note: Working in the BLO will cause the tube to decrease just slightly at this point. Ensure that the chapstick tube is still fitting well. If too tight, rework the tension of the sts in the previous Rnd so that it fits.
Switch to Color (E)
- Rnd 20: In BLO: Sl st in the first st, sc in each remaining st around. (12sts)
- Rnds 21-22: Sc in each st around. (12sts for 2 Rnds for 2 Rnds)
- Sl st to the 1st st, ch 6, sl st in the same st, sl st in the next st, and fasten off. Weave in the end.
- Add a keyring to the loop.
Ideas for Mixing Things Up Even More
- Use DMC embroidery floss to personalize the pencil or add a fun Kawaii face.
- Forego the chapstick holder altogether and turn the pencil into a regular amigurumi pencil! Firmly stuff and shape the pencil with Poly-fil and then close up the top by: After Rnd 22, In BLO [sc2tog] 6 times (6sts), then sl st to the first st and fasten off leaving a long tail to close up the hole. Close the hole with a tapestry needle stitching only through the front loops until the hole pulls nicely closed, secure, and weave in the end. Remember with this option that the length of the pencil can be adjusted by increasing the rows made in Color (C).
