Who knows, perhaps there’s even a prince living inside this Crochet Frog Egg. Okay, perhaps maybe not, but he is definitely charming and ready to delight those you choose to make him for. He’s perfect for decor, gifts, imaginative play, frog lovers, Easter, Valentine’s Day, and so much more.
He’s beginner-friendly, looks gorgeous in any shade of green you can imagine, and due to his smaller size is a great option for using up scrap yarn.

Don’t forget that small projects like this make great keychains too!

The Inspiration

The Crochet Frog Egg is part of an ongoing collection that I call Animal Eggs. At the time of writing, you can also find a Chick, Fox, Bunny, Sheep, Bee, Bear, Cat, and Dog as well as a regular Easter Egg on the blog.
I currently have several more designed and in the process of being prepped for release as well as a list of those I’d like to design, so if this is your kind of project you should be excited for what’s to come!
If you have a specific animal you’d like to see, leave a comment and let me know. I’d love to take it into consideration when I’m deciding what to design next.

They make great keychains, too!

The Yarn

The Crochet Frog Eggs were made using Yarnspirations Caron Simply Soft yarn. It’s a lighter worsted weight, size 4, acrylic yarn that comes in a wide range of colors and styles.
The Simply Soft line contains numerous shades of green among the various styles of Caron Simply Soft, so the Crochet Frog Egg was entertaining to use this yarn for. In the images, you’ll see that I used Pistachio and Dark Sage from the Simply Soft Solid line. Then, for one of the frogs, I used Woodland Heather from the Simply Soft Heathers line. Their tummies are made with Sunshine and Off White also from the solid line.
The greens that I didn’t use include Kelly Green, Limelight, Sage, Cool Green, and Chartreuse. Another fun variation on green would be to make a speckled frog using the color White Sage Speckle. In this case, he’d be more of a white frog with green speckles, but still so much fun. Neon Green has been discontinued but if you have some of that in your stash it would make for one bright green frog. See, so many green options to choose from!
If you want to branch off from green there are so many more color options as well. If you’re like me, or every time I make a design I want to make it in every color of the rainbow. 😂🌈

Substitutions
Any brand of worsted weight acrylic or cotton yarn should work well for making the Crochet Frog Egg but note that due to variations among brands, the finished size may vary slightly. Also note, if mixing yarn brands, that it’s important to ensure that the thickness of the yarns are the same to ensure consistency in stitching.

In some of the pictures, you’ll find the Miniature Crochet Frog Egg. Shrinking my designs down by using a 1.5 mm hook and size 10 cotton has become one of my favorite things to do. It took the design from approx. 3 inches (7.6 cm) tall to approx. 1.25 inches (3 cm) tall. If you enjoy it too you can find all the details in the “Materials” section of the pattern for the supplies I used. Enjoy!
As always, I’d love to see/hear about your experiences with making the design and the products you chose to use. Tag me on social media @jenhayescreations and use the hashtag #jenhayescreations to share!

Design Notes
- The pattern is written in English using US crochet terminology.
- The pattern is written in continuous rounds. It will be helpful to place a stitch marker at the beginning stitch of the round and move it up at the start of each additional round.
- At the end of each round, the number of stitches for completion is noted in parentheses.
- Further design notes, tips, and options will be provided throughout the pattern to help aid in construction.
- Caution! If using safety eyes, take into consideration who will be using the item. The use of safety eyes is not recommended for children under the age of three or for those prone to putting things in their mouths as they may cause a choking hazard. Crocheted or hand-embroidered eyes are a great alternative!

Assembly

Pin all the pieces together to determine the desired placement for the entire Crochet Frog Egg and stitch securely into place.
General placement and stitching suggestions:
- Eyes: Firmly stuff and shape the eyes. Center the eyes over the top center of the body with the top edges resting between approx. Rnds 1 and 2 and the bottom edges of the eyes at approx. Rnd 8. When stitching, add additional stuffing before closing the hole to fill in the gap between the eye and the body, as needed.
- Tummy Patch: The tummy patch is centered with the eyes. The top edge rests at approx. Rnd 8 of the body and the bottom edge at approx. Rnd 17.
- Stitch the Mouth: Using black embroidery floss and an embroidery needle stitch a V-shaped mouth centered over the tummy patch and eyes with the top points of the V between Rnds 5 and 6, approx. 2sts apart, and come to a point between Rnds 6 and 7.
- Add an Eye Accent: (optional) Using white embroidery floss and an embroidery needle stitch accents on the edge of each eye. The needle is inserted from one point to the next and the floss is pulled taut until it rests nicely against the safety eye. >Design Tip: Changing the location of the accent is an easy way to change the look of the frog. Pictured the floss runs from approx. the top center to the bottom center along the outside edges of the safety eyes or from side to side across the top of the safety eye.
