The Crochet Apple is a super fun amigurumi project that can be made either with or without the cute Kawaii face! Make them in typical red, yellow, and green apple colors or modernize them with the look of neutrals or tweeds. Either way, they are a super fun decoration, gift, or toy for all the apple lovers in your life!
The Crochet Apple is the second pattern in the growing collection of Crochet Cuisine items being designed for the blog. The first item was Carrots which can be found HERE. If you have a food that you would like to be turned into amigurumi form let me know, I’d love to add it to my list!

The Inspiration
We’ve been enjoying the crispness of fall here and that has also meant all the sights and smells of fall permeating into life’s activities and yummy treats. Two flavors that specifically remind me of fall are pumpkin and apple.
Walking through the grocery store the other day I found bins of pumpkins ready to be turned into fun decor, jack-o-lanterns, pies, and other yummy treats. Next to them were even more bins of apples in a variety of reds, greens, pinks, and yellows. With such things on my mind, it really is inevitable that they end up, at some point, made into amigurumi. Seriously, it’s crazy, as an amigurumi designer, how nothing is immune to becoming amigurumi inspiration.
I hope that you too enjoy making yourself some fun apples for your fall decor, for gifting to others, craft fairs, and more! I’d love to hear how you plan to use them!
If you’re interested, on the blog you can also find three different pumpkin patterns to include in your fall festivities and decoration.
The Yarn
Red Heart Super Saver yarn was used to make the Crochet Apple. It is a worsted weight, size 4, acrylic yarn that comes in a wide variety of colors. It is typically inexpensive and is often easy to find either locally or online.
Substitutions. Any brand of worsted weight acrylic yarn should work well for making the Crochet Apple but note that due to variations among brands that the finished size of the Apple may vary slightly. Also note, if mixing yarn brands, that it’s important to ensure that the thickness of the yarns are the same to ensure consistency in stitching.
If a worsted cotton yarn is preferred, this too should work fine. Making the Crochet Apple with different sized yarns has not been tested, but should also likely work well, just make sure that any necessary hook size adjustments are made to accommodate the chosen yarn.
As always, I’d love to see/hear about your experiences with making the design and the products you chose to use. Tag me on social media @jenhayescreations to share!

Design Notes
- The pattern is written in English using US crochet terminology.
- The pattern is written primarily in continuous rounds, it will be helpful to place a stitch marker at the beginning stitch of the round and move it up at the start of each additional round.
- At the end of each round, the number of stitches for completion is noted in parentheses.
- Further design notes and tips will be provided throughout the pattern to help aid in construction.
- Caution! If using safety eyes, take into consideration who will be using the item. The use of safety eyes is not recommended for children under the age of three or for those prone to putting things in their mouth as they may cause a choking hazard. Crocheted or hand embroidered eyes are a great alternative!

- Ch 8
- Row 1: Working in the back bar of the ch: Sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (7sts)

>Design Note: The first Rnd of the leaf will be worked on both sides of a chain.
- Ch 9
- Rnd 1: Working in the back bar of the ch: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook (mark this as the starting st) and in the next 6ch, [sc, ch 3, sc] in the next ch (>Design Note: This last series of sts finishes off one side of the ch and completes the first st on the other side of the ch). Working down the other side of the ch: sc in the next 7sts. (16sts + 3 ch)
- Rnd 2: Sc in the next st, hdc in the next st, dc in the next st, tr in the next st, 3tr in the next st, dc in the next st, hdc in the next st, sc in the next st, [sl st, ch 2, sl st] in the ch 3 space at the top point, sc in the next st, hdc in the next st, dc in the next st, 3tr in the next st, tr in the next st, dc in the next st, hdc in the next st, sc in the next st. - Second side of the bow: Ch 4, 3dc in the back bar of the 4th ch from the hook, sl st in the same st.
- Fasten off leaving a long tail to wrap around the middle of the bow and stitch the bow to the apple. Weave in the starting tail.
- Wrap the tail around the center of the bow 5-6 times or until the desired look is achieved. Using a tapestry needle secure the wraps on the backside of the bow and attach the bow to the apple in the desired location.
Cheeks
Make 2 (Optional)
Using Color (E)
- Rnd 1: 8sc in an adjustable (magic) circle. (8sts)
- Rnd 1 alternative: If preferred, ch2 and then 8sc in 2nd chain from hook. (8sts)
- Sl st to the first st and fasten off leaving a long tail to stitch the cheeks to the apple. Weave in the starting tail.
Assembly
- Adding the leaf to the stem. If adding a leaf to the apple, using the finishing tail of the leaf and a tapestry needle, stitch the bottom center of the leaf to the very bottom side of the stem (the side with the tail).
- Once the leaf is attached to the stem, continue to weave the tail up the back center of the leaf about ⅓ of the way up the leaf. Remove the needle but leave this tail as is until noted to pick it up again later for further stitching.
- Shaping the apple & adding the stem & leaf. Using the tail for the stem and a longer doll/upholstery needle, it’s time to shape the apple. Insert the needle into the top center indention in the apple and out through the bottom center of the apple. (>Design Note: Make sure that the leaf is sitting in the desired final position before shaping as it will be difficult to adjust later.) Then insert the needle just a little over from where it came out the bottom and back up through the top center again, making sure to pull the yarn with each pass so that an indention forms in the bottom of the apple. Continue to repeat going up and down through the apple in this manner until the desired shape is achieved. Secure and weave in the end.
- Securing the leaf to the apple. This step is optional, it tacks the leaf down to the top of the apple a bit. With the tail from the leaf left earlier and a tapestry needle, tack the leaf down to the very top of the apple. In the images, the leaf is tacked at about Rnd 6 at just the very center of the leaf for a couple of stitches (moving the tail from where it was left earlier may be necessary to achieve desired placement for tacking). More or less tacking can be done to achieve the desired look.
- Adding the face (optional). If adding a face use Color (D) and a tapestry needle to stitch mouth, eyelashes, eyebrows, and any other desired facial features. Add the cheeks and attach the bow, if using. Suggested mouth placement (as pictured) is centered, two rows down from the eyes, the edges of the mouth in the shape of a V with the top corners approximately 4sts apart and each side about 3 Rnds long.
