Assembly
Pin all the pieces together to determine the desired placement for the entire piece and then stitch them securely into place. Remember to add any additional stuffing needed before closing up the holes on the pieces requiring stuffing.
General stitching and placement suggestions:
- Center the body over the back part of the head. Adding additional stuffing right before closing is especially beneficial so that the neck remains sturdy and does not wobble.
- Ears. Position the ears so they arch slightly with the front two sides at about around row 20 of the head and the back curve of the ear around row 22. No need to be too fussy.
- Crocheted Eyes. Place the eyes at about Rnds 12-13 and about 6sts apart.
- Nose. Place over the top front of the snout. When attaching the nose remember to also embroider any sort of desired mouth.
- Arms. Place them about 2-3 rows down from where the head is attached to the body. The last round of the arm made a bit of a shoulder for the bear. When attaching the arms to the body add a bit more stuffing to help shape this shoulder right before closing up the hole.
- Legs. The legs are attached over about Rnd 7-12 with about 5-6 stitches apart.
- Tail. Lightly stuff the tail if desired. Place the tail at about Rnd 8 of the body, centered on the back.
Bow Tie
The bow tie is totally optional, but such a fun addition! Use it as a traditional bow tie or as a hair bow!
Main Part of the Bow
Using Color (D)
- Ch 15
- Row 1: Working in the back bars of the ch: hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and in each st across. (13sts)
- Rows 2-4: Turn, ch2 (doesn’t count as a st), hdc in each st across. (13sts for 2 Rows)
- Place a st marker in the working loop and weave in the starting tail.
- Row 5: Sc around the entire outside of the rectangle putting 2sc in each corner to help round the corner. Sl st in the first st and fasten off. Weave in the tail.
Center of the Bow
Using Color (D)
- Ch 11
>Design Note: Loop the chain around the middle of the main part of the bow to make sure that it reaches all the way around. It should be snug but reach all the way around, cinching the middle together. If it doesn’t quite reach add any additional chains needed to make it fit.
- Row 1: Working in the back bar of the ch: sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each st across. (10sts)
- Rows 2-3: Turn, ch1, sc in each st across (10sts for 2 Rows)
- Fasten off leaving a long tail for stitching. Weave in the starting tail. Fasten around the center of the main part of the bow and stitch in place. Use the remaining tail to attach the bow to the bear.

I’d love to make this bear, but cannot print out the full pattern. No matter how hard I try, some of the lines are missing. Different ones with different printer settings.
Jen says
Sorry, I don’t know why this would be happening. I’m working on having ad-free, easy printable versions for a minimal price in the future, but don’t yet have this option available. You could just view those parts or all of the pattern online, but I also know that this is not preferable for some individuals, myself included. Sorry that I can’t be of more help. I do hope that you can find a solution that will work for you. Please do share when you finish. I would love to see! 🙂

Hi there! I love this bear!! There is one typo on round 4, where it states 3sc in next 3 sc. Is that correct or is it one sc in next 3 sc?
Jen says
I’m so glad that you are enjoying it! This is always exciting to hear. 🙂 You’re right it’s a typo. I’ve changed it in the pattern to read as it should (…sc in the next 3sts…) Thanks for catching this and making the pattern better! 🙂 I actually went through and updated the whole pattern to hopefully make it more readable. Thanks again! Have a wonderful day!

Sorry, I missed your message. I’ve had an issue recently with Facebook not giving me notification of all of my messages. I’ll have to look into remedying that more because it is quite frustrating for everyone.

Hi Jen,
I am loving working this bear, however, I am a little confused about the ears. Probably dummie me, but I can’t work out the top/bottom and where to do the 9 sc. I can have a guess at how to go about it but I like to do things right!
I look forward to your reply.

Hi Jen. Having lots of fun with your cute bear pattern. With rows 19-20, 60 sts, for 3 rows, do you mean 2 rows? I’m sure it would just be a typo. I’ll send you a photo when completed. 🙂
Jen says
Yes you are correct. It should say (60sts for 2 rows). Thanks for catching that. I’ve updated it in the pattern! I’m looking forward to seeing your bear!!! 🙂

Hi. I’m having a good time making your teddy bear. I just have a couple questions regarding the kegs. When I’m done with row / round 22 do I slip stitch all the way around or just thru one stitch? Also is there any particular way you join all your pieces? Do you use a certain stitch ?
Jen says
I’m glad that you are enjoying the pattern. Finishing the legs, you just slip stitch into the first stitch and then fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. I use a whip stitch to stitch the pieces together. It helps to pin everything in place first. When attaching make the stitches directly under where you want it to fasten (rather than above or below the stitch)and make sure to stitch into every single stitch around. Sometimes it’s easy to want to hurry and stitch things together so we skip stitches now and then. Don’t do it! As you’re stitching also stop periodically to ensure that you’re maintaining the desired placement and make adjustments as needed. And one last tip, add extra stuffing before closing up the last few stitches when appropriate to do so. A gap is left when you join one piece to another and this helps to eliminate that gap, adding extra stability to the piece. If you have any more questions don’t hesitate to reach out!

Love the Classic crochet teddy bear pattern. I am having trouble with the legs, it says chain 6, working in back bar ,understand back bar,but is it ch 6 MC,or just ch 6. Also don’t understand work in top of the chain.Sorry just started crocheting animals .
Jen says
Hey Jay, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Your comment got filtered into the trash amongst hundreds of others that truly are spam/trash, but I got it out of there now, so let’s get your questions answered! You’re going to chain 6 in the MC (main color) of your bear, just a regular chain, NOT a magic ring/circle. (I hope that answers your first question. I believe that is what you are asking.)
Then for Rnd 1 you will be working both sides of the chain. So let’s talk about that. When you look at a chain there are two sides. The top that looks like the regular stitch (looks like a V) and on the bottom it with have a horizontal bar (looks like —). The back bar, as you said you understand, is that horizontal line. The top of the chain will be the Vs on the other side. So let’s look at Rnd 1 together.
Rnd 1: Working in the back bar of the ch: Sc in the 2nd chain from the hook (mark this as the first st), sc in the next 3sts, 3sc in the last st, Working in the top of the ch: sc the next 3sts, 2sc in the last st. (12sts)
After chaining 6 you’ll be working in the back bar to start out with, so Sc in the 2nd ch (bar) from the hook (mark this as the starting st), then sc in the next 3 back bars, then put 3 sc in that last st. This 3sc does a few things: 1. It works that last back bar of the ch, 2. It rounds the corner, and 3. It works the first st on the front side.
Okay, now working in the top of the ch or in other words the regular ch (V)sts. Sc in the next 3 sts, and then put 2sc in the last st for a total of 12sts all the way around. And you’re now ready to work the remainder of the Rnds in a circle leg in regular rounds.
Now let’s talk about design options for a minute and why I write the pattern like this. I think it will be something valuable for you to know as you make more amigurumi in the future! When working around the chain like this some patterns you see will just have you work only into the top of the chain, catching one leg of the V on the way up and the other leg of the V on the way down. This totally works too and you can definitely try it this way. However, doing it this way will also often leave little holes down the middle of the chain where the V was pulled apart to work each side. By working in the back bar and then the top V it eliminates these holes.
Please don’t ever hesitate to reach out with your questions. Congrats and welcome to making crochet animals! If something in my explanation doesn’t make sense I’m glad to explain it another way until you understand. I also think that this question would make a great blog post and video, so it’s best that I get on that soon too! Doing that will take me a bit, but in the meantime if you’re on Instagram and you think it would be helpful to have a quick video I’m glad to post one there for you in my stories and save it to my highlights so that it’s available to view as many times as needed. Just let me know if that’s something that would help.
Anna says
Hi, is the head supposed be be about as big as the body? I just want to make sure I’m doing this right.
Jen says
Relatively speaking they are about the same size. My body measures approximately 5 inches tall and the head approximately 3.75 inches tall. Individual tension, yarn choice, and other factors could play into this. Let me know if you have any other questions. I’m glad to help.
Anna says
Okay thank you so much! This was very helpful!

If you have any other questions don’t hesitate to reach out. Happy Crocheting!
Sierra says
On the beginning of the head at round 11 when you mention the design note and say to remember the increasing is for the forehead, you missed an awesome pun..
You: remember that for stuffing later
Me: “bear” that in mind for stuffing later 😉
